Skalaski to Eastern Kentucky

Charlie did a great job for us both times he was at Liberty, but the guy sure does move around a lot, and I have to say this is a strange choice. While EKU has accomplished more than Liberty at the FCS level, when you consider resources and facilities it looks like a lateral move at best, and everything I had heard indicated he was very much on board with Liberty´s mission.

This is a pretty big loss.

This is a strange move indeed. Any known connections to EKU?

I agree. Just how big depends on the timing of his actual departure. If he sticks around to help finish this recruiting class like he did before he went to work for the Jaguars it will lessen the blow. With what we can offer, we should be able to hire a top notch replacement to hit the ground running for the 2017 class.

So does anyone have the 411 on this dude?
Liberty (FCS): Per source, in addition to the news from last night, we also understand that Aaron Wilkins will be the new assistant director of player personnel

And per Manson, Kettie Fickter, who was Skalaski´s assistant, has been promoted to the Director of Player Personnell position. She may be the only woman to hold that position. He also speculated that Charlie may have left because he was passed over for the vacent WR coaching position. It wouldn´t surprise me, because it appears the Player Personnel position is mostly administrative. The way HCTG structures things, position coaches do most of the actual recruiting and evaluating. At EKU he will coach the WRs as well as being Associate HC and recruiting coordinator. Knowing that, the move is easier to understand.

The only Aaron Wilkins I could find in a quick search is a HS coach from Arizona.

The fact that Kettie would be quickly promoted to replace Skalaski for this job despite the fact that she is really young and has zero football experience on her resume tells me 2 things. First, she must have done a fantastic job as Charlie´s assistent and impressed the heck out of HCTG. Second, the job itself must be almost exclusively an administrative position which does not require actual evaluation of player skills. I don´t care how smart she is, she doesn´t have the background for that, and everything I have been hearing says HCTG relies on position coaches for that. At this point I am less concerned about the changes than I was when I first heard it.

Kettle's great administratively. Always has been. She gets the business, gets what players want, and works well with the coaches. I would guess this job is a lot more in line with what Adam Godwin used to do when he was Charlie and Paul's assistant. It's a lot of coordinating who is going where, keeping track of tapes, keeping the logistics in order, and making sure official/unofficial visits go well.
With that said, it doesn't surprise me at all that Charlie left if that was the job he was having to do. While Charlie is a salesman, he's also a coach. He likely got passed over by one of Gill's buddies and realized he'd never been more than that position under this staff. If I were in his shoes, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing. Eastern Kentucky got a good one. We'll miss him.

You wouldn´t know it from his twitter, but he was an assistant coach at Reedley College in California.

We got a good one in Ron Brown too SJ. He didn´t get that job just because he is Gill´s ¨buddy¨. If Charlie took the Player Personnel job thinking it was something it wasn´t, maybe we can blame poor communication. If he knew what it was and thought he would just slide into the first coaching job that opened up, that was his mistake. Brown´s resume as well as the trust Gill has in him from years in the trenches together made that choice a no brainer.
Skalaski´s new gig at EKU sounds like a perfect fit.

I'm not saying Brown is a slouch by any means. He's a great coach and seems to be a great dude. But he's also Gill's buddy and likely wouldn't be here if it weren't for that friendship. That's not a bad thing. Most great jobs come because of who you're friends with.

They have a plan that will cost 215 million and they have raised 4 million this year. Math wasn´t my best subject, but I can tell you those numbers won´t work. I give their president credit for having a big vision, and he seems to think they can raise a lot more. Time will tell.

Congrats Kettie. She will do great.
Sounds like Skalaski just wanted to coach. Btw I think Kettie dates the younger Skalaski.

I am confident Kettie will do an outstanding job. But it wouldn't surprise me if she's only in this position for one season, then she will "be promoted" to a bigger position.
I have seen her "in action" at every home game in her old position. Very professional.

And the Skalaski legacy at Liberty comes to an end as Charlie IV has accepted a position as WR coach at D3 Gettysburg College.

I hope she stays at LU. Leaving LU for Gettysburg is a huge drop off, regardless of the position offered.

He'll be there a year before taking a better job. It was probably one of the few openings this late in the year.
