We move on to a very loaded position in the backfield:
Players Lost
Kevin Grooms (left program)
Players Returning
DJ Abnar 292 Rushes 1298 Yards 15 TD (2014 Big South All Conference First Team)
Todd Macon 61 Rushes 266 Yards 3 TD
Austin Kaigler 9 Rushes 41 Yards 0 TD
Carrington Mosley 5 Rushes 31 Yards 0 TD
Joshua Smith 4 Carries 5 Yards 0 TD
Desmond Rice No 2014 Stats (Redshirted due to injury)
This is probably one of the positions to watch heading into spring ball. After Rice went down with a knee injury on the last day of spring practice 2014, the biggest question was, could DJ Abnar handle the increased workload headed his way as the "feature back"? He answered with a resounding "YES", finishing with the 4th most rushing yards in school history following the Flames loss to Villanova.
Redshirt freshman Macon ascended to the backup role following Rice's injury, and was an excellent second option, giving DJ a needed rest, until he sustained an injury and had to miss a couple games.
Macon will probably be the third back with Rice's return, but Liberty has an interesting situation in that they can essentially deploy numerous backfield combinations with Smith returning following a season ending leg injury last season. Add in three returning fullbacks (will go over that later this week) and you have an absolutely loaded unit heading into next season.
