Since the FBS playoffs took shape, it has knocked the G5 schools out of some bowl game slots.

Most notable schools that were left out in G5 conferences:
In the Sub Belt...
Texas State (8-4)
Georgia Southern (9-3) (denied NCAA waiver)
App State (7-5) (denied NCAA waiver)

In C-USA...
Middle Tenn. St. (6-6)
UAB (6-6)(last year of FB program; bowls didn't want protesters at the game)

The AAC saw the writing on the wall and proactively created the 'Miami Beach Bowl' for host its champion. The stadium the game with be played in is in Marlins Stadium (once home of the old Orange Bowl). I read an article that the stadium in order to accommodate the Miami Beach Bowl game will include extra bleachers bringing the total capacity of 40,000...

In your opinion...
1) Could Liberty's Williams Stadium with a full capacity of 30,000 (expected in 2015) host a FBS bowl?
2) Could the city of Lynchburg be able to not only accommodate visitors, but entertain guests that come to the city and stay at the hotels?
3) What would you name the bowl game?
4) Would a bowl game increase our chances in gaining an invite to an FBS conference?

I will ignore chef Ramsay's machinations and answer the question...

1) im sure with a 30,000 seat capacity could accomodate a decent bowl game crowd. It would be a nice boost to the university as well in other areas besides economic.
2) that I think would be the rub...would there be enough entertainment for everyone that came to town...I'd say no at this point. they would probably have to work with roanoke and Danville on that one
3) Centra Health Live Well Bowl
4) It certainly wouldn't hurt those chances...

There wouldn't be enough entertainment in Roanoke and Danville either. With only one airline into and out of Lynchburg (to one non-stop destination), and most bowl teams not located along the NEC for reasonable rail transportation, I don't see a bowl game ever being hosted in the Hill City (or the Star City for that matter).

If there is going to be a bowl game in VA, it'll be hosted by ODU in the Hampton Roads area.

Here are a list of bowls played north of NC/TN:

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl - Played at Boise State

Quick Lane Bowl - Played at Ford Field in Detroit

Military Bowl - Played at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium

New Era Pinstripe Bowl - Played at Yankee Stadium

How exactly are you planning on attracting guests to Lynchburg, in the middle of December, for a football game that is almost meaningless? Oh yeah, also, they can't drink here and everything closes at 10. Gretna High School has about the same chance to host a bowl game as we do.

That's a good one. I was thinking something along the lines of the "Red, White, and Blue" bowl since there is already Liberty, Independence, and Military bowl games in place.

The key thing is to get a sponsor to endorse the bowl game.

Since you didn't answer the question, I'm assuming your answer is no.....

Trust me, there are many more "key things" that would need to happen before the 'Burg could get a bowl game.

I love living here and I love games at the Bill but that doesn't make it a marketable destination for a bowl game.

The reasons why have been pointed out by others.

Agreed on all fronts... I feel that Liberty and the city of Lynchburg has done such a great job to accommodate the students with restaurants around campus and Liberty itself building fun activities for the students on the campus. That's the only reason why I posed the question of if its possible. I'm sure more things would need to be built, but the great thing is that money would not be a problem.

Yeah...

No.
I understand what you're talking about... My old church home was down the road from the Redskins stadium. The Redskins cut a deal with my church in which the church would use its parking lots for Redskins fans. The church received the cash and most likely gave the Redskins a cut... I'm not sure how the deal was arraigned.

The fans in general used the parting lots for tailgating, drinking beer, smoking, and in some cases, as a toilet... The church members were sectioned off in order for the Redskins fans to have their space. One of the church out-reach ministries helped in cleaning up the property once the game was over and everyone was gone.

If Liberty could get past fans and their uh, "gameday activities", it is possible to do though. The question would be how much would Liberty be able to tolerate.

Yes Liberty/City of Lynchburg could host a bowl game.

Drinking should not be an issue. Simply do not allow it on campus grounds. One can go to a bowl game without drinking. I have been to 2 or 3 bowls, and never drinked anything but water and diet coke.

Yes, one can...but that doesn't mean the majority of those going to bowl games will or will want to.

Agreed. I mean we don't even have a Hooters!

Is it too late to nominate for Dumbest Post? YOU may have gone the water and DC route but how many others were there?
Or
As I'm thinking about it we could call it The Prohibition Bowl. Make it a 1920's theme!

Was Liberty even able to close the deal on hosting the VHSL all star games that they normally put on in Hampton Roads, if you can't close the deal on that, there is NO WAY and I do mean NO WAY, you are going to get a college ALL-Star Game.

There are barely enough restaraunts open after the Flames play let alone possibly bringing in lets just say a cpl more thousand people. Along with the other logistics that have been tossed around earlier.

I'm not sure why this thread would be considered dumb. Liberty owns its own property and the financial opportunity is there, particularly for the G5 conferences. Why not?

Actualy I believe they debuted at Liberty last summer if memory serves me correctly (and a perusal of the news and advance, which you probably could have made prior to your comment)

Agreed... This situation is sort of like when a country are awarded to host the Olympics. The country that was rewarded with the Olympics always have to "beautify", if you will, their place and build more things to host and accommodate visiting guests from other countries. Liberty would be no different.

Lynchburg is definitely not preferred place to stay for entertainment, especially in December. Therefore, a sponsor would definitely be needed and also the game needs to be picked up by ESPN or someone else in order for schools to be willing to participate in a bowl game in Lynchburg.

Realistically speaking though, for most tailgaters, they need their brats and their beers. That's why they tailgate! If Liberty would enforce that for this single bowl event, schools wouldn't even bother. I shared what my old church did only for the purpose to show that it can be done.
