Feature on D.J. Abnar that is running in Friday's paper ...

Will finish up the opponent previews in the next two days and won't have anything else from practice until Wednesday, just as an FYI for people. Thanks for reading.

Is that a matte finish on the helmets? Please tell me that will be used in games, looks awesome on the red hats.

DJ certainly has very expectations for himself. 1500 plus yards and tops in TDs and yards AND an undefeated season? seems he has a lot higher expectations than we do for this year

I personally prefer the blue helmets but I guess I could learn to like the red

(Edit: just looked it up...RJ has the ONLY 1500+ yard season in 2008...with exactly 1500 net yards)

Are we going with three hats this year or just the one?

It's my understanding there will be 3 helmets again this year - red matte, blue, and white.

Finally ... position previews. Sorry for the delay. Have been stuck on desk shifts this week and wasn't able to get to talk to assistants until today. Here's the QBs post:

Post on the running backs. Fobbs wasn't really tipping his hand on who the No. 2 will be. Have to think Kaigler is in the lead, just due to experience.

Have to think it's either Kaigler or Macon since Smith brings much of the same things Abnar does.

It'll be a tough choice for Coach Fobbs. I think that Mosley will start to make a move and join the other three over the course of camp, but that remains to be seen.

Mosley had plenty of moments when he played at LCA. I look forward to more updates on that battle

my observation says this

smith/kaigler
macon
mosely

Abnar has always been "lightning back" for us so I think Kaigler or Macon ends up the backup and Smith gets some touches in garbage time so we get to see him in game action. Now if abnar gets hurt (God forbid), Smith would be the "lightning" guy

Got to feel good about the O-Line. 5 starters, all with significant experience, all 300+. Also, 3 of them will be back next year. Add in Hartman & Callison who are "itching" to get into the starting line up as just a RFr & So, respectively. This year, and the next few years, look very promising.

LANG wrote:Why only a one-deep on the line? Wagner said his players don’t back up certain positions, but work at all five line spots so they can be used when called upon in any situation. The Flames have traveled with eight offensive linemen in recent years. Wagner wants to bring 10 on the road this year.
 is this the new way of looking at it? a unit as the whole, not the individual positions? I know little about it but always thought tackles/guards had different skill sets

seems like depth on the line has always been our issue (maybe everyone in FCS) which is why you see us play tough until late in the games when guys tire.

explains a lot of last quarter collapses against decent competition

I dont think having 10 guys who can play anywhere on the line is necessarily a bad thing shorty. as manson noted, we have 5 starters back, all big bodies, who have significant experience for us, and even if we redshirt all four freshman linemen, that is still 13 guys for us up front. I think coach Wagner will be able to find the right combinations for us in the front 5
