Well Nick and Alan are down in North Carolina for the 2014 kickoff of the Big South football season with the annual media day and release of the preseason all-conference team and order of finish

Where do you guys think the Flames will slot in when the votes come down tomorrow?

Also, Josh Woodrum and Dominique Davis will be the player reps for us tomorrow and we will be up around 2:45 on the video stream

They'll pick us to finish 2nd.

I'm picking us to finish 3rd. Not going to be a fun year.

I have a blog post scheduled to go live at 1 p.m. with all of the picks, all-conference info. Won't be tweeting much, if at all today. Lots of people to try to talk to in a two-hour span.

Generally speaking, how long before the first game will the starters be named?

Is there a date certain when the depth chart is finalized?

We usually get an informal depth chart from the earlier practices of training camp. By mid-Camp, we have a pretty solid view of the lineup with generally a few position battles still to be determined. Since the coaches want to encourage competition for playing time, the true depth charts aren't clear until game week in most cases.

Coach Gill has shown a propensity to play his cards very close to the chest for season openers. I would suspect with his Coach Osborne-influenced past that it would likely be the case again this season.

Mike Hogewood calling Big South games this fall (with Hogue moving into the admin at CCU)...definite upgrade.

He won't put a depth chart out until the training camp portion of fall practice ends.

No surprise with lots of CCU love.

I have a feeling that some G-W folks are pleased to not see one of their defensive guys nominated as the DPOY. It seemed like in recent years that was a kiss of death for that player.

So uhh, that Kennesaw St schedule? I know it's going to be a first year program but... WOW. Edward Waters, Paine, Point, @Cumberland and @East Tennessee St. 3 NAIA, 1 DII and 1 DI. That's going to lead to one ROUGH year in the Big South.

The goal of a first year program is to build confidence as the players get their first taste of D1 football. I'm not completely surprised to see that level of competition for year 1

It is rare for a 1st year FCS program to have so many FCS games on their schedule. Hats off to them for trying to compete against the entire Big South.

Just curious, who do you have finishing 2nd behind CCU instead of LU?

4th is an insult considering we whipped CSU last fall, when they were ranked #12 at that.

And yes, getting arrogant Hogue off of conference broadcasts will be a blessing.....

The vote was close between CSU and G-Webb, and I assume it swung CSU's way because a) CSU won 10 games last year and b) this year's game is in the low country. That's kind of the way preseason polls work. That was my voting rationale, anyway.

I'll hammer out the conference opponent preview blogs starting on Tuesday, just FYI. G-Webb up first.

I wouldn't say 4th is an insult for you guys, but with that said, I would pick GW to finish 2nd. We aren't going down to Coastal and beating them. Then we get you guys after playing Richmond, App State and a bye week. Gill hasn't exactly been great in games following bye weeks (really struggled with GW two years ago, complete let down against Coastal last year).

I see us getting DDT'd by UNC. We'll split with App State and Richmond. And we'll drop two Big South games. Hello, 8-4 and another disappointing selection day.

Dont blame sweat for his assessment. A lot of us are pretty jaded from years of near misses and shared championships. while I dont share in his grim prediction on the season, I do think this is going to be an interesting race before KSU joins the fight in 2015

We have back-to-back trips to the Commonwealth after our bye, at VMI, then back up to your place the following weekend. I find it odd that CCU is not playing an FBS team, but they don't need to with their ATM of a coach funding the shortfalls.

If GWU can avoid injuries, they have the potential to pass CSU for third. I think that GWU lacks some depth and that is main reason why I think that CSU is better, but that could certainly change.
