Kohls Kicking on their #53 K in Class of 2014 wrote:Avery attended the a December 2012 Showcase Camp. Did well on FG's when weather conditions were not optimal. Consistency is key, athletically could make big leap in the next 12-18 months. Competed at the UC Challenge and showed improvement. Avery is making important improvements and seeing some good results of hard work. Avery's punting is improving and his FG's and KO's are solid as well. Avery scored 22 on FG's and had many 65+ yard KO's. Avery was impressive at the 2013 Eastern December Showcase. His FG power and height were much improved. His KO leg was one of the strongest at camp as well. Avery has worked hard and made big improvements form where he was at this summer. Avery is a very good college prospect.

It would be 5 yards shorter than his kicks from the 40. :doh

I just love how the guy on the videos sounds like he's an announcer at a baseball game making the call on a deep fly ball...

He's been offered a preferred walk-on spot, and is also receiving interest from Toledo, Ball State, Wofford, and Michigan State.

If he can get it in the end zone consistently from the college kickoff spot is what im getting at. Question is will he take the offer or hold out for a ride from these other FBS places, who I think all have established two deepfeels at the spot

Am I wrong or do very few kickers get full rides when they first come?

That is correct. The staff has to be very high on a player to give them a scholarship.

For the record, we have John back this fall with his distractions behind him. We should be good at placekicking ... filling Grant's shoes at punter is our biggest immediate need.

Its very rare if Im not mistaken. Lunsford was a rare case and Bevins (who posts here on occasion) before him I think also got a full ride...he could correct me if Im wrong in that.

BJ, you are right. It can be rare at some schools, but it really comes down to the coaching staff and their philosophy on kickers. I was fortunate enough to be on a full all 4 years, but some schools ( i.e. VT) will bring in multiple kids and have them battle for a scholarship. Some schools will realize the need for a good kicker and give them money and some do not.

So the battle for starting punter is gonna be a pair of preferred walkons....should be an interesting training camp

TG only mentioned him as a "kicker". I wish I was there to ask if he's going to get a look at punter. I'm sure he will, but I also know Echols was told he was brought in to compete for the starting kicker spot.

So he's gonna get a shot at Blanchard and Lunsford...just as intriguing. so the punter job is Turner's for the taking then?

he's starting as Lunsford is suspended again
Echols worked out for Liberty his junior year and the Virginia school was one of about 20 schools he and his dad identified as places he wanted to workout for.
During his workout, he hit 13-of-16 field goals and even nailed a 60-yard try. In other tests, he broke the record for a special teams player’s vertical leap as well.
"They expressed an interest very clearly and they thought I was going to be the guy if I wanted it," Echols said. "It just fits and it works."
Echols grew up in Charlotte, N.C., and moved to the Holland area when he was 13.
A week ago, he found out Liberty’s starting kicker was suspended for the first two games of next season, and will start against North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the season opener.
Liberty was 8-4 overall last season and 4-1 in the Big South Conference
