2013 Season Postmortem

As we officially put an end to the season today, I just want to say that while I am disappointed with the lack of postseason reward, I am proud of how this team rallied and closed the season after the early season dissapointment they went through. a mentally weak team (like 2005 for instance) would have folded up the tent and mailed in the rest of the games. instead they rose up and finished strong.

We do lose some very good players on defense this year (Bah, Freeman, Hyland, Fogg and Aikens come to mind immediately) but we do return a lot of very good players and some good contributors as well, plus I believe all of our contributors on offense so we will have some very interesting battles in spring ball 2014 to be sure.

In sum, I'm proud of this team and I look forward to 2014.

Share your thoughts on the season here (no sarcasm preferably)

No sarcasm?

I'm out.... :D

Seriously though, this team worked hard and looked like a totally different team to end the season in a good way. The defense will have plenty of holes to fill but I believe we will be fine. I am cautiously optimistic about next season.

I said it in the game or postmortem thread and I'll say it again. I think the way this team played after losses to ODU and CCU show that this coaching staff can get it done. The very easily and justifiably could have mailed the season in. Instead they played hard and capped it off with a masterful game to secure 2nd place in the BSC. Our offense should be solid next year and we will have big shoes to fill at LB and DB.

The good news is that Coach Gill had his team peaking at exactly the right time (for Big South Co-Champions); the bad news is that no one on the playoff selection committee cared.

I'm thankful for the Christian leadership that Coach Gill and his staff provide to our LU student-athletes.

Lots of stuff in today's blog post ... a playoff breakdown, looking back at '13, looking ahead to '14 schedule, my all-conference ballot:

Always love reading your objective view on things, Chris. Especially after reading some of the nonsense on here on both ends of the spectrum.

Perhaps because I am so close to the action, I have trouble giving Sam Houston any reason to be in the playoffs. One win over two months ago doesn't equal their schedule that was actually worse than ours. I hope Coach Gill is on the horn to Coach Shealy at HBU because apparently that win is what put Sam over the top. Crazy. On a related note, it would be a hoot to have Coach Shealy return to Lynchburg to face his former boss and alma mater.

The 2014 schedule info was outstanding. Thank you for the clarity this early in the game. I now have a better idea when Homecoming could go down.

hope Lunsford gets the cranial/rectal inversion straightened out.

shades of 2005 or 06 when we were losing on missed 20 & 30 yd FGs

we need that kid to be on next year

Agreed on Lunsford Medic...we are lucky that none of our games came down to a game winning field goal but that may not necessarily be the case next year

At least one came down to a game losing miss. Not much difference there.

Well I'll give you that although that can't entirely be placed on him for the game in question
