Sly,
We had a bye on Saturday and several of the players and parents I tailgate with got together to huddle over a laptop computer to root you guys on the victory - first time we have ever pulled for the Flames. That was a tough loss for you guys and reminded me of our loss at Liberty last year.
I'm interested to see this game on Saturday to see if our week off helps us put the team that has won 4 games back into play or, are we going to continue the slump of the last two games against Charlotte and Coastal. The Charlotte game was a huge disappointment. Our D allowed Charlotte to score 29 points in the final quarter of a game that we had completely dominated for three quarters. Up to that 4th quarter, I would have told you that our D this year was very special. Our new DC seemed to be spot on with his reading of opposing Os [Marshall game excepted] and had our guys in the right place for most of the plays. After the 4th q at Charlotte, we have struggled to get back in that position.
At Coastal, we were down 4 starters on D and we're not that deep so that certainly had an impact. We gave up too many short field opportunities to Coastal and they capitalized on all of them. Not to demean Coastal - they really are a good football team. Their front guys on O and D all seem to have doubled in size since last year. I doubt there is anyone who is going to beat them twice before this year is over so I suspect they will get the autobid.
In any event, this is my 5th season being associated with GWU football. Liberty is the only conference team we have not beaten. We are looking forward to the opportunity to change that on Saturday. If the team that beat Furman, Wofford and Richmond shows up, it should be a really good game.
Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

It is great to have you back with us this week. It sounds like our teams share several things in common. I can tell you that our week off didn't change much for us with huge 4th quarter collapses on both sides of the bye week.
Frankly I am very concerned with a CCU hangover. This one hurt more than most.

I'm glad I don't have to get the team back up for Saturday. If our guys come out ready to play, I'll give Gill some serious props.

BOILING SPRINGS — The Gardner-Webb football team’s off week gave it time to heal up injuries, but the bye also provided GWU the chance to evaluate itself midway through the season.
The coaches and players pinpointed where they can improve, and first-year GWU head coach Carroll McCray is looking forward to seeing that process begin when his team hosts Liberty at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in its Homecoming game.

After it was known that Aldreakis Allen may miss some of the 2013 season, a lot of questions were asked about the running back position. While Desmond Rice impressed us in spring practice, it seemed unlikely that the LCA standout would have what it takes to carry the load, especially with former four star recruit Clifton Richardson transferring in.
Though Clifton Richardson and D.J. Abnar have both found a place in the Flames’ offense, Rice has recently set himself apart as the feature runner due to some impressive performances. “I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to show what I can do out there” Rice told us Tuesday after practice. He is definitely making the most of his opportunity, averaging 109 rushing yards over his last five games.

Gardner-Webb prepares for dangerous Liberty team
"Dangerous?" Pretty accurate. Unfortunately it's more synonymous with potential spoiler rather than perennial winner...
Go Flames!!!
I don't think that any one down at Gardner-Webb thinks of their program as one that might have its season "spoiled" by Liberty. They are aware that we can beat them and their losses show that we will be tough to beat. Person for person, I think that Liberty is a better team.

Save maybe for the columnist of the above referenced article...

The Flames head to Boiling Springs, NC, this Saturday afternoon to take on the Gardner-Webb University Runnin’ Bulldogs and their star running back Juanne Blount.
Blount, a redshirt junior, is having a breakout season. His 705 rushing yards so far this year put him just under 300 yards away from matching his total for the first few years of his career. He’s averaging a very respectable 4.3 yards per carry, with 5 touchdowns. He’s also caught 9 balls for 88 yards.

Liberty (3-4 overall, 0-1 Big South) and Gardner-Webb (4-3, 0-1) renew their rivalry this weekend. The Flames have won 6 consecutive meetings between the Big South schools, and lead the overall series 10-8-1. Liberty was able to overcome a 28-10 2nd half deficit to win 42-35 in last year’s meeting. The victory was head coach Turner Gill’s first at Liberty.
Both teams are coming off losses to Coastal Carolina, and this game could determine who will finish 2nd in the conference.
