Final Stats

BOZEMAN, Montana- The Montana State Bobcats, the consensus number two team in the country, used a dominating opening half to secure a 42-24 victory over Monmouth in the opening game of the 2013 season in front of 21,007 fans at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats scored on five of its first six drives to take a 32-3 lead with 4:57 left in the first half. A 57 yard pick six by defensive tackle Craig Ashworth put the game at 39-3 at halftime. Monmouth battled back in the second half, outscoring Montana State 21-3 in the second half but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.

Such a brutal schedule to play at montana and then have to travel to Bill the next week. At least theyre not afraid to play at tough places.

Their conference switch-up forced them into some tough matchups. But frankly their home gate is nothing of significance. They signed to play us before their Big South invitation became a reality.

This week I was able to chat with Josh Newman of the Asbury Park Press to get his insight on the Monmouth Hawks football team. Here is the transcript of our conversation:

Me: With Monmouth having to travel cross country to Montana State and back to New Jersey, then south to Virginia this week, how do you think the travelling will affect them, if any at all?

Josh: They got back in the early morning hours on Friday, the team had a day of rest, watched film, they were back on the field (Monday). So, you would think that the 2 extra days will give them the rest they need and get back on the field this week to get ready for Saturday.

I sure hope we don't look past these guys, they don't look to bad on paper and to come back on Montana State means they figured something out the second half...

Again, Montana State has aspirations for a FCS national title, and they had much of their starters out by middle-late 3rd quarter, and Monmouth had their starters in. So, I think that played a little part of it. You know Monmouth had their starters in, Montana State started to breathe. The (Monmouth) starters started to play really comfortable early in the 3rd quarter when they were still just the 1s vs the 1s, but again the atmosphere was a little overwhelming. They (Monmouth) took a breathe, kind of settled in and did some nice things there in the 2nd half that hopefully they take into this game on Saturday.

I walked through the possession by possession breakdown of that game last night on ESPN. Monmouth's defense and offense was nearly non-existent until near the end of the 3rd quarter. I know match-ups vary, but I am really looking at this game as a much better indicator of how good we are than the Kent State game. We know what a very good FCS squad did with them at home. Can we manhandle them in similar fashion?
