Chris Toomer's son CJ was in town this past weekend working out at camp and meeting the coaches so I came through. CJ and this kid Ellis were the standouts on Friday Night Lights. This kid has a cannon!

As one of his coaches in school (wr) ill def say this young man has a cannon. He can make all the throws from anywhere on the field and would def be an asset to LU. Wrs and TEs will be happy. This kid has to be decent anytime you can get nick Saban and Alabama to come knocking on the door. He outperformed a cpl of the two and three stars at a camp few weeks ago, and can throw 46 from two knees on the ground.

Which kid was CJ? What position was he playing? I was there as well as I brought a friends son down there to get work at the FB position.

Coming from a guy who made his name at LU passing the ball (and jacking up way too long jumpers), the cannon perspective is appreciated from Scar. Anchorage is a long way from Lynchburg to come for camp!

Thanks for the insights, forbidden. He is definitely somebody we will be watching to see if he lands one of the coveted QB offers.

Ok now I know which kid this was, he wore #4 the Qbs kid that came from Alaska. He was good, by the time they moved to 7v7 I saw him taking snaps at Qbs as well as reps at Wr

As an aside I've never understood the deal with how far a kid can throw from his knees. For one, if his knees are on the ground, he's down so how far he can throw from that position seems irrelevant. Secondly, how many times do you hear a QB needs to improve his footwork, which is sorta hard to do from your knees.
Carry on

Apparently it's a drill that they do down at Alabama, and I would say its safe to assume that they know more about why they run their drills than either you or I. I think a cpl of national championships lends more credence to whatever it is they may be doing. I just asked the type of drills they were doing. Hopefully this answers your questions.

Down here in Texas where they know a great deal more about passing than in Tuscaloosa they have used this drill at camps & combines for the 20+ years that I have been covering them. It supposedly gives a clear view of pure arm strength. The idea is that mechanics can be coached up but pure arm strength can only be improved incrementally.

Allegedly one of the way that our current starting QB stood out to Coach Rocco's staff from some other strong QB campers was some parlor tricks he did from sitting in a chair and hitting moving targets. While I seriously doubt there will ever be any chairs set up midfield from which to throw, the idea that a QB in the grasp could still muscle a completion has its merits.

Not really but I do appreciate the effort. :D I'm just curious as to what it's purpose is. What is the drill trying to achieve.

To me this drill makes more sense then throwing from your knees. Sitting in a chair gives you a better simulation of 'being in the grasp' of a defender and being able to hit moving targets shows accuracy to go with arm strength. But that's just me.

I have to say that watching the highlight video from that game, the kid Roebuck from Yorktown was pretty good as well.

We need to sort out our QB position for this year first. From the looks at the first scrimmage,...... several decisions need to be made.

Easy there Chicken Little...it was the first intrasquad scrimmage. Woodrum is and will be the #1 QB when we head off to Kent. Masha showed himself very well and is making a case for #2 with Shashaty. They still have the rest of this week and one more scrimmage on Saturday before they go into Kent State mode next Monday. Its not time to grab your umbrella and hope the sky doesnt hit you in the head just yet.

A fair question to say the least. should he...I certainly think so...although if he makes it very plain that they cannot keep him off the field then certainly play him. he has shown that he can be a playmaker so far

In a perfect world, Masha redshirts. Woodrum is just one snap away from being done for the season, is it realistic to have only one QB as his backup? Add to the fact that one QB (Shashaty) is a walk-on and has never played a snap in college.

I think the way Masha is handled this year will be much in the same way Gabe Henderson was handled a couple years ago during Mike Brown's senior season. If you remember, Brown was the senior QB with Tyler Brennan a veteran junior backup. The only other QBs on the roster that year? Gabe and Woodrum. Both were redshirting, but you can bet if Brown got injured, Gabe's shirt would have been burned.

I think the same applies to Masha this year. The coaching staff will fully expect him to redshirt, but will prepare him as though he is the backup. If Woodrum goes down for any extended period of time, Masha would be ready to play.
