The following is a terrific primer for getting up to speed on Kent State's incredible 2012 and the chances they can do it again in 2013 ...

Kent State returns star power in Dri Archer, Trayion Durham and Roosevelt Nix. But turnover in both the coaching staff and on the field should ensure a slow start for the Golden Flashes in 2013. Schedule, roster, projections and more below.
1. No pressure, Paul Haynes
From the time Dennis Fitzgerald left town in 1977 (after seasons of 8-4 and 6-5) until the start of 2012, the glory days for Kent State football basically consisted of that one year where Glen Mason got them to 7-4 and then left (1987). In that span of 35 seasons, Kent State had a winning record twice, and won one or fewer games in a season 10 times. The program that gave Don James his first head coaching job and produced players like Jack Lambert and future coaches like Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel in the 1970s was a football wasteland for most of the last three decades, and while Doug Martin (head coach from 2004 to 2010) came really, really close to breaking through (5-7 with a pretty good defense in both 2009 and 2010), he never did.

I think we're going to have our hands full with Kent State. We better be geared up to stop the run or it's going to be a long day.

unless we just run out of steam or get a bunch of injury's this game is gonna be a complete opposite of what some Kent State writers think. "easy breezy opening game" is what one of them wrote. with everyone they are losing and a new HC they are ripe for picking. i won't make a score prediction based on our new faces in key positions, but i feel that if we play to our potential we WIN this game. i'm more concerned about ODU then KS. I think this years team is gonna be special. I may be wrong, but what the heck i was wrong once last year also. i know it's still a ways away but i'm hoping everybody is scheduling there vacation days so we have a good turn out. i have about 15 screaming fans ready to hit the road and trying to round up a few more. GO FLAMES!!!!!!!!

Tough for me because it's a Thursday night game. Wish it was a Saturday opener & then I could be there.

My wife and I intend to make the trip. I have not been to the Cleveland area in a long time. I might also be able to convince additional immediate family members to also make the trip who live a couple hours away.

I will probably tune into that one from home. Having a 2 month old, I wont be comfortable with traveling that far just yet.

I have clients in Akron that I am trying to convince to schedule trainings on a certain Thursday night in August. We'll see if they bite.

Remember this is Libertys first game also. Hopefully we are past the"Throw something against the wall and see what sticks" phase.

The real question will be how the incoming players do when they challenge the players that went through spring ball. I dont think itll necessarily be a "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" mentality, but if any of the new players absolutely stands out, the coaches will do their due diligence to find a place for them on the field

How many different "position" battles coukd there possibly be, unless there could be some for backup spots

22 plus special teams if my math is correct.

Well i shoukd have known, but your math is not correct. Woodrum is not battling neither is sigmon fogg or Boyd and thats just a few. 22 positions total on O and D but not all are battling incoming frosh for spots. Smh

OL you may see some good battles outside of Boyd because of the fact that only six linemen returned, and one of them (Steward) was just drafted by the CFL, even though he will play according to our friends at LFN. The most notable other ones where I see the freshmen pushing for a spot in the two-deep are WR and RB. The inexperience at safety behind Dial and Hagen makes that one to watch as well

In years past, we have played well against the big schools to open season.(NC State, Wake Forest. West Va). I think we can beat Kent State.

I think your right! Especially when you consider their last game against a weak team from a weak conference like Sunbelt ! ! !

Kent State will be every but as good as Wake was last year, and Liberty was much more talented coming into NC State.
Liberty played respectably against WVU, but the Mountaineers let up off the gas in the second half because Stewart is a CLASS ACT.
Not saying not possible, but not a cakewalk, nor much different from what it would've taken against NCSU or WFU.
