Fan the Flames 2013 Spring Outlook: Offensive Line

Last group on the offense to look at as we look ahead to the spring football game on Saturday, and its the boys up front:

Players Lost

Matt Haller
Stan Herring
Aaron Lundy
Andre Mondor
DJ Sellman
Jay Weatherington

Players Returning

Malcolm Boyd
Ethan Callison
Aharown Campbell
Mitch Hanson
Grant Jones
Greg Ray
Hunter Steward

Lots of experience was lost at this position with three starters and all-conference players in Weatherington and Lundy. The team does get a welcome return from 2011 first team all-conference honoree Boyd, who suffered a leg injury in the second game of the season and was granted an extra year by the NCAA. Questions abound about the status of local product Grant Jones, who redshirted in 2012 after appearing in 8 games as a true freshman, but is not listed on the 2013 roster. Coach Gill did sign five linemen in the 2013 recruiting class so these six along with JC transfer Cody Gochenouer will be fighting for spots on the line, but look for the freshmen to all give them a good run and potentially gain spots in the linemen rotation.

One thing for sure, is the coaching staff has definitely recognized the OL as a priority and have made it one with the plethora of OL that are coming in with this '13 class. You are gonna def need a D1 budget to feed all of these big young men.

Per FlamesNation Grant Jones has tweeted that he will be back with the team for summer workouts next week. Just speculating, but it looks like his not being on the roster this Spring may have been to avoid the Bear Bryant rule and free up a scholarship for another player while his way is paid based on being the son of an LU employee and an LCA grad.

Info I have is that he was basically off the team due to lack of effort. I believe he may have now seen the light and been given another chance.

If that is the case, I hope he makes the most of it. Grant has posted here in the past and may still be checking in from time to time, so he may be reading this.

I hope then he realizes then that we are all pulling for him to turn things around. Enormous talent will get you no where without the will to use it to the best of your God-given ability.

Agreed...Titan Trophy and getting D-1 FBS offers doesnt mean that he is somehow gifted into a spot on the team...hoping he hits the ground running in workouts and makes it into the rotation this fall

Great news and adds needed depth on the O-line.
