As National Signing Day 2013 is long in the rearview mirror, I figured Id look through the spring roster and see where our biggest needs will be as the 2014 recruiting season is already ramping up even before teams hit the field for spring practice.

Here is how the seniors break down going into next year:

3 WR Jaquan Glover, Greg Pratt, Branden Francis
1 RB Aldreakis Allen
1 TE Brandon Apon
2 OL Malcolm Boyd (redshirt), Hunter Steward
3 DL Jibrille Fewell, Cory Freeman, Francis Bah
2 LB Scott Hyland, Chris Mayo (converting from DB)
4 DB Aaron Dial, Sorie Bayoh, Walt Aikens, Kevin Fogg (redshirt)
1 P Grant Bowden
1 LS Richard Wright

I may have missed a few but my question still remains...where do you think youll see most of our recruits coming from as we look to the 2013 HS season and 2014 Signing Day (which will be February 5)

Way too early to even think about that. I have to see what developes with us getting more A1 transferes and who steps up their game and what direction we go with our competitiveness. I would start with the Offensive and Defensive lines. Most of the time our line play seperates us from the playoff contenders (JMU, Montana, App St, etc). We could use a few more "Blue Chippers"

WOW ! That is a lot of very good players leaving. If the injurys are low, we should have a great year, I guess we will have to wait and see for 2014.

Good question! There are some obviously immediate needs jumping out. Spring ball and summer camp will help define the needs as talent is evaluated and depth charts are re-done. It will be interesting to see how we progress this fall. I am especially interested to see if we can develop some competition at the QB spot. Nothing like raising the game of the incumbent...

I concur with Papa that #2 qb spot will definately be a postion battle worth watching in camp this summer, and im looking forward to seeing what happens with the LB's.

As we get inside our last full week before signing day, thought I'd bump this up and see how we are doing on our position needs in recruiting

Ok as of this weekend we have

3 OL (James Passmore, Gregg Storey, Jeff Fox)
2 LB (Avery James and Lucas Irons)
2 DL (Javon Majors, Tolen Avery)
1 QB (JT Bradwell) *Not a team need*
1 RB Daquin Edwards
1 WR (BJ Farrow)
1 ATH (Corbin Jackson)
1 DB (Cameron Jackson)
1 P (Avery Echols)
1 TE (Trey Caso)
Tomorrow we enter the final week of the "recruiting season" and from the list I posted in the OP here is how the "needs" stack up:

3 DB (although Jackson could fill one of those)
2 WR
1 DL (preferably a DT)
1 LS

The whole premise of this thread is shaky at best BJ. Most of the freshmen we sign are going to be redshirted, and will not meet any "team needs" until 2015. On the other hand, you don't take into account the freshmen who were redshirted last season, and although they appeared on the roster were not available to play, so essentially they are new to the team as far as where they fit into the depth chart at their position. We redshirted a whole slew of Olinemen as well as 2 or 3 DBs and 2 or 3 Dlinemen. These are the guys who for the most part will be taking up the slack for graduated seniors.

I also think you are off base is saying QB is not a team need. We have only 2 scholarship QBs in our program. That is not enough. The common wisdom is that unless you have really loaded up at the position the previous year or 2, a QB should be included in every recruiting class.

I thought I read in another post somewhere that Trey Caso committed to ASU? ...nevermind wrong tight end.

Thanks for the heads up, Chris. That accounts for one of the scholarships available. I am not sure how many we have left (if any) to give on Signing Day.

Thanks for catching up on that Lang. (I had pm'd him about it after another poster asked me about the situation). he probably will be battling whoever comes out of spring ball of those three for the starting nod come July. I like his height though, that will certainly make him somebody that Woodrum will want to feed the ball to especially in the red zone

Ahh...thanks for that detail RC...that will make TE a position to watch along with QB for who will backup Woodrum this fall.

With Herman back, that will make the battle among those three essentially for the third TE (which could be very important depending on how many 2 TE sets we run)

Today is pretty much the last day coaches have to shore up previous commits or pick up a few more pieces to finish out the class

If memory serves me correctly ballcoach, manson mentioned in a post on LFN that TG wanted at least two safeties that he planned to play as true freshmen. Also, depending on how Turner does, Echols could very well come in and be the starting punter as a true freshman. Could Farrow start as a WR? He certainly could, depends on how the WR corps does behind Petey and Gabe (Shells first among them) One of the LBs could also start.
Are we back?
