Nick Newman was always interested in attending Liberty University. All the Battlefield High School senior needed was to hear from the Lynchburg-based school.

The Flames' pursuit of Newman picked up over the last month before an offer was extended Jan. 20. Newman was ready to commit right then, but then held off, wanting to visit the school first.
The article references the fact that we recruited him as a strong safety. And it adds in these nuggets about how we won him ...
Newman also was offered by Temple, Delaware, New Hampshire, Gardner-Webb, Norfolk State and VMI. He visited VMI last weekend.

Newman was scheduled to visit Temple the weekend of Dec. 14, but then decided against doing so because he wanted to wait until the new coaching staff was in place. Temple introduced Matt Rhule as its new head coach Dec. 17.

The Owls continued to show interest in Newman and asked him to visit the school next weekend, but Newman said he is done with his visits.

At the beginning of April, prospects from up and down the East Coast piled into a complex in Trenton, New Jersey for the NUC 5-Star Showcase. In the end, it was an underrated prospect from Battlefield (VA) that took home co-Linebacker MVP at the event. Unsurprisingly, Nick Newman has seen his interest rise of late, and recently made a trip to Morgantown to check out the Mountaineers.

So we bring in this kid who is reportedly between 6' 3" to 6' 5" as a strong safety? If he ever gets a feel for the position that he apparently played as an underclassman in HS then we could have a serious beast across the middle of the field.

Welcome to the LU family, Nick!

Doesn’t make sense to have him as a strong safety, at 6 “3”, 215 plus pounds, and 4.6 speed. He can be red-shirted for his first year and groomed to be a productive WILL or SAM at the linebacker spot, which by the way is not as deep as the secondary. Either way it’s a great pickup for the TG and staff.

Strong safeties are often spun down to LBs. The fact that they see enough cover skills in him to project him as a safety makes him all the more exciting.

He also could be a player like Brent Vinson or Chris Mayo which would be awesome as well

Impressive. He visited WVU, UNC and NC State and was invited to Auburn and BC! I´ll take that for credentials over some stars any day. I also like that it said he will graduate early and will be here for spring practice.

He was being recruited by some at WR and others at LB. Obviously we think he has the coverage skills to play safety.

I thought Brent Vinson was one of the safeties. May be wrong though.

That would be correct. The returning safeties who played a lot are Chris Mayo and Jacob Hagan, who is actually about the same size as Newman.

Well thatll be one position battle to watch if Newman is really wanting to be here for spring practice

I talked to Chris Mayo the other day and he said he is putting on weight for a move to linebacker

well itll be interesting to see how that position shakes down then with Mayo making the position switch and Hagen coming off I think his best season

I hope he doesn´t overdo it with the weight gain. Chris actually played linebacker much of the Stony Brook game and his speed, ability to shed blocks and tackling skills were instrumental in slowing down Maysonette and company. I would think a few more pounds of muscle will serve him well in playing the position full time. Too much could take away what makes him good.

I love having LBs who can stay on the field for all three downs sliding into coverage.

it will really look imposing to see him standing out there at 6 3 as well as hagen 6 3 sitting in the secondary especially if he is a hitter

Completely forgot about Hagen being tall. Could shape up to be a very nice secondary.

Don't forget he's only a kid. I imagine he will bulk a good bit over his time here and could develop into a great Lb or even a stud DE. Wouldn't be the first kid to make that transition. whatever position he plays, he looks like a great pick-up for the team.
All I got to say is "Hello, Newman" and welcome!

Ya he said it would only be about 10 lbs so that shouldn't cut into his speed all that much.
