Bye Week Discussion

As we have come into the bye week, I figured Id get a discussion going on the team as we hit the halfway point next weekend.
Looking just at the results, most outside of the "Liberty bubble" would (and probably do) think that this team stinks. If you look inside the numbers (especially those of us that have been to games), the team is better than the record indicates. Now I wont go so far as some have and say we are "the best 0-4 team in the country", but in each game you can point to 1-3 plays that if they went the other way, maybe change the game outcome.
Both Hudson and Woodrum have shown well, but after going with Hudson at the beginning, I really think Woodrum should be the guy going forward. He has made some mistakes (Remember, until this year he hadn't played a competitive down of football in about 2 years), but he has shown that he could become a very special player even now.
Both of our running backs (AA and SCH) have shown flashes, and this past Saturday was the biggest of them all. Neither is a Rashad Jennings, but both have done very well. Abnar has shown that he could be a special back in the next couple years as well in the little he has been in.
PK...well he is PK. He has made some very tough catches and though he hasnt had a huge TD like he has the last few years, he is doing quite well as a #1.
I'll add more thoughts later on about the line and the defense but thought Id get things started.
A couple ground rules (which I put in more for my own benefit than anything):
1) Keep it to the football team. No talk of ADs, former football coaches basketball coaches, baseball coaches, politics or anything that isnt related to the football team and the current season.
2) Keep it civil. If you have a problem with the team, that's fine, but dont sound like you are one move away from jumping off a cliff because you lost all reason for living or something

Very high standards, BJ.

Last year we'd started 1 and 3, finished 7 and 4 and failed to win the conference or make the playoffs.
This year we've started 0 and 4. We can still finish 7 and 4 and if we do we win the conference and we make the playoffs. We can also finish 6 and 5 (losing to DII Concord) and if we do we win the conference and we make the playoffs.
We've fixed the special teams issues this week. Now we need to fix the turnover and penalty problems.
We still have a say in our season.
Go Flames!!!

I completely forgot that we started 1-3 last year and that team was FAR superior to this one and we have competed pretty well in all 4 games. So I guess that is the silver lining.
I believe we are still the 2nd best team in the conference and that is exactly what I expected coming into the season. It is very difficult not to get wrapped up in the right now but this is a rebuilding year no matter what spin is put on it. That is what this is. If we finish 6-5 in a rebuilding year I think it shows we are heading in the right direction. Of course if we have 2 seasons in a row at 6-5 that is another story.
Anyways, I appreciate the perspective ProudPapa. It is very easy to forget

I'd be much more positive if we hadn't played worse/more undisciplined every week and weren't playing the wrong QB.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!
I'm not sure we are playing worse and I feel fine with the QB we are playing. He has a lot of upside and many years. If you think long term and Program Building you can see how this would be a good choice. I say play as many young players as we can to get them experience and see what they can do. That let's us see what holes we truly need to fill.

Looks like BJ's bye-week thread is much less popular than the others.

I saw that too. I guess they figure he won't see any time at RB so may as well try to get him some time at DB. He's 5th on the RB depth chart right now.

Play of the day is usually uploaded here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/FlamesAthle ... ature=plcp
As for depth chart, there was one in Lang's blog before the season but I dont think they have one anywhere that is constantly updated

Montana still looks respectable even though they've been losing but boy, that Norfolk St loss AT HOME is looking really embarrassing. They are really not good.

I think that Norfolk State game is showing how indispensable Nick Sigmon is to the Flames' defense. LU is better with Bah but it can survive without him. You take Bah and Sigmon out, and you get what you had that night, which was a bunch of missed assignments on defense that led to a lot of long runs.

Add to the fact Turner Gill was not there, plus we were probably overconfident at half up 17-7. But yes it does look like a bad loss.
