Greetings Alumni!
My name is Turner Gill and I am the new Head Football Coach for the Liberty Flames. As I am sure most of you have heard, we are trying to move into the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). We are currently in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Our season opener on Sept. 1 will be against an FBS team, Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The primary difference between FBS and FCS is the number of scholarship athletes on our team, and while this is a disadvantage, my philosophy is that playing FBS teams provides an advantage. These games challenge the team and make us better. By challenging ourselves, we have an advantage when it comes to playoff games and playing higher ranked teams. When our players are confident and know that they can perform well against any school, they are ready to be a championship team. I want to start with our very first game and show Wake Forest that we are second to none.
We will be playing some highly ranked FCS teams and trying to earn our first playoff berth by winning a conference championship. This is where you come in. It is no surprise that home-field advantage plays into our success. We have a talented team and I have heard about our great fans. These two factors alone can change games. We will work hard to put an exciting team on the field for you to watch and you, in turn, can help us to keep their motivation and passion strong by cheering us on for all four quarters. Our combined excitement will help this team win!
The Lord has brought some great Christian men here to lead this team. I am excited for them to get to know you and for you to get to know them. Our calling is to Train Champions for Christ and we are blessed to be a part of this great university along with you. I look forward to seeing you at the games. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Go Flames!
Turner Gill
