I didn't know what to do with this one but I figured Id post it here in the interim.

Rashad has another unbelievable offensive performance, but di dthey pick him for offensive player of the week?

Big South Announces Football Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina quarterback Tyler Thigpen and Charleston Southern quarterback Collin Drafts have been named the Big South football Choice Hotels co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Buccaneer defensive back Okeba Rollinson is the New Balance Defensive Player of the Week for games played the second weekend of the 2006 season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Gardner-Webb punter Michael Hanna was selected as Special Teams Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb quarterback Stan Doolittle garnered Freshman of the Week honors.

Thigpen, a senior from Winnsboro, S.C., was key for the Chanticleers in their dramatic 41-38 road victory at No. 27 Wofford. He was 13-of-20 through the air for 288 yards, three touchdowns an no interceptions, and added 10 carries for a team-high 94 yards and one score on the ground. Thigpen, whose 382 yards of total offense is the fourth-highest single-game performance in Big South history, directed the Chanticleers on six scoring drives of 61 yards or more, including four of 80 yards or more. He connected with receiver Santini Washington for an 80-yard touchdown pass, the longest play in CCU history and third-longest in Big South history. His 288 yards are the second most single-game passing yards in school history, while his 94 rushing yards are sixth-most in a game by a Big South quarterback. Thigpen also became the second quarterback in League history to surpass the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his career.

Drafts, a senior from Beaufort, S.C., tied a Big South record with five touchdown passes in Charleston Southern’s 38-35 double-overtime win at The Citadel, the program’s first-ever win over the Bulldogs. Drafts was 24-of-35 passing (68.6 percent) for 320 yards, including a 25-yard scoring strike in the first overtime to Maurice Price. He led CSU on three touchdown drives of more than 60 yards and added 35 yards rushing for 355 yards of total offense – eighth-most in Big South history. Drafts’ 320 yards are fifth-most in a game and he guided the Bucs offense to a 7.1 yards per play average (377 yards in 53 plays).

Rollinson, a sophomore from Gastonia, N.C., posted seven tackles (five solo), 4.5 tackles for loss of 26 yards, 2.5 sacks (22 yards), one forced fumble and one pass break-up in CSU’s win over The Citadel. On the first play from scrimmage in the second quarter, Rollinson caused a fumble with his first sack of the game. He posted another two tackles in the series (including one for minus three yards) to force a Bulldogs punt. Later in the quarter, he assisted on a sack that eventually led to another punt, and added another sack in the third quarter. Rollinson was part of a defense that allowed just 4.9 yards per play.

Hanna, a sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga., set a new school and Big South single-game record for punting average, booting five balls for an average of 52.8 yards against Tennessee Tech. Hanna’s punts, in order, were 54, 57, 59, 56 and – in an attempt to pin TTU deep with GWU at the Tech 38 – 38 yards with less than a minute to play. Hanna pinned Tech inside the 20 three times, including his 59-yard kick that was downed at the one-yard line. TTU did not return any of his punts and its average start was its own 12-yard line. Hanna leads I-AA with an average of 48.8 yards per punt.

Doolittle, a freshman from Ninety Six, S.C., went 7-of-8 passing for 80 yards and a touchdown in Gardner-Webb’s 30-26 win over Tennessee Tech. He entered the game on GWU’s third drive of the night (second quarter) and calmly marched the Runnin’ Bulldogs 76 yards in 13 plays (5:12) to deliver a touchdown pass of seven yards to Duvuaghn Flagler. Later in the fourth quarter, Doolittle entered to complete a pass that led to a Gardner-Webb field goal that trimmed Tech’s lead from 26-24. He finished the game with 13 rushing yards and 93 yards of total offense.

uhh, did you read the stats above?

Both of those lines are just absolutly sick. I think we need to reserve our anti-LU outrage for when it's needed. Or else we're just a bunch of whiners.

Rashad was great but only played one half against DII competition. Thigpen finished with the 4th best game in BSC history and Drafts tied a BSC record, they deserve it.

There should be no gripe here. The Big South made the right choices, for reasons already spelled out by LUConn and SJ.

I agree that Thigpen & Drafts both were deserving. But from this point forward, we won't be playing DII competition so there won't be any excuses.

Except for SSU.

Hey, if VMI can sweep the players of the week against a non-scholie school then we should be able to get some love even against SSU.

SSU is never good but they are bad this year. Either of the D2 schools we just crushed could probably take the Tigers for a walk and never break a sweat.

As Libertine mentioned earlier this year, I never take road game for granted. Our record in recent years has me taking even the weakest of opponents seriously away from Williams.

Not saying we should take 'em lightly but don't expect any POW love from Kallander and Friends that week either.

I agree with the BSC for once here.

I'm mad at ROCCO. Leave him in, so he can get 300 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Just Kidding. It's not about the awards - just winning.

OK - again, not being serious. I'm not holding my breath at winning anything from the BSC. Jennings could rack up 946 yards and 14 touchdowns against Wake Forest and the BSC will give it to Coastal for getting to thier game on time. (That by the way is my prediction for the wake game - it's going to be a good time).

When I saw that Thig and Drafts won the award, I knew this thread would be here before I even got here....

And yes, VMI had a couple of players get honored after playing a non-schollie I-AA team, but the only team in the league to play a full-fledged I-AA team that week was Coastal, and they didn't have anybody worthy of the honor, so somebody had to get it...it just so happened that Mizzer was the best candidate that week (along with whoever ended up getting the defensive award).

dude this is a LU board of course people are going to be LU minded....its how fans always are....

with that said as much as I wish Jennings would get the award he didn't deserve it this week the others did....but last week however, i think that is a different story

It's cool - I don't think anyone is complaining about this weeks award, just taking another chance to talk negatively about the BSC.

Why aren't you complaining that your team didn't win it ------oh wait ------------you don't have a team.

Why don't you guys get a football team? Everyone knows that real colleges have a football team. Step up and give us that automatic bid.

Eh, we don't waste our time or money with JV football.

I understand, neither did my little 1A High School. Do you guys have a Prom too? Or a homecoming dance after your basketball game?

Posted: September 12th, 2006, 9:28 am
by Realist
Nah, we just went to the Big Dance. No one cares about JV football teams.

and nobody cares if you make the big dance and can't get out of the first round every year.....until a couple years ago that was our women's team....nobody nationally cared about Liberty making it every year, until we went to the sweet 16....

Haha, we get more exposure for a regular season game than for Women's basketball are you kidding me? Remember, me, you, and 3 others that can dribble can beat just about any women's team. No one cares.

ok dude, if i went down to florida, where i am from, and started talking college basketball and I asked them about Winthrop they would know who you guys are, but they would know you guys lose every year....my point wasn't to make liberty sound better, my point was that nobody cares if you make it if you lose ever year....its the truth, just deal with it man
