Holds Offers from (As of 6/10/12):
  • Liberty
    Tennessee Tech
    Tusculum

High got a Division I scholarship offer — kind of.

The Christian Academy of Knoxville record-setting quarterback received an offer last Friday from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

The Flames are trying to make the transition from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) to the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A).

The 6-foot, 180-pound High said, via text message, that his visit there went well and that he is considering the school.

High received his first offer — from Tennessee Tech — in March. He's also been offered by Tusculum College.

He recently worked out at a camp at Tennessee and Wake Forest and is awaiting his first true Division I offer.

He has the credentials. He was named a Mr. Football Back winner this past season — his first as starting quarterback — when he led CAK to a Class 3A state title and set single-season state records in six categories, including passing yards (5,191) and passing touchdowns (65).

The kid put up some eye-popping numbers in his first full season as QB. According to VolNation, he is getting serious looks from the Vols. Apparently his parents are Vols season ticketholders.

My guess is that his size is the thing primary thing holding him back from getting more offers up to this point. Obviously our staff was impressed with what they saw from him on campus.

Maybe that size, and those numbers, could make him our Kellen Moore/Drew Brees type of QB.

Rivals lists him at 6' 2" but Scout goes with the 6' 0.5" height. I am guessing that the latter is probably from a combine and not a coach. But I agree that shorter college QBs can do just fine. I covered Drew in high school and just across town in Austin was a kid named Major Applewhite who did just fine. And here in Houston, a kid named Case rewrote the NCAA record books while listed at 6' 2" but realistically was no more than 6' even.

Looks like a solid pickup potentially. The Vols have two sophomores a R-Sophomore and a freshman on their roster so I think there is a chance we will land this kid

He's probably right around six feet. I was eating lunch with three kids from his grade when I read we offered him. CAK is a small Christian school but they play good football and play in the public school league. They won state this year and he rewrote every passing record in Tennessee.

Reminds me of when the Vols passed on another small Knoxville high school quarterback a few years ago...Chad Pennington. 8)

You know something ESPN (or the other guys who get paid to write about this stuff) don't know? From what Ive been reading, people are calling for it (i.e. disgruntled Vols fans on message boards), but DD still will be wearing his orange pants on the sideline this fall. Now 2013 is another story, but unless youve got a scoop youd like to share, Id be careful with pronouncements like that.

As a writer myself, there are two things you never want to have happen:

1) Get a story wrong
2) Get a story late (as in not be the first with a story)

So if BYD knows something, Id love to hear it, but you cant just make statements as fact unless you have something to back it up. (kinda like people saying Pacquiao is on the juice and there isnt record of a single positive test under any protocol)

Anyone know if we're still recruiting him? He's on pace to break pretty much every Tennessee passing record that's ever been on the books. He's short but a great QB. No clue if he's at our level or not. He's gotten a few FCS offers that I know of.

Agreed. That's why I was asking. I haven't seen him play except for highlight.

It is my understanding that when we landed the commitment from Masha that we stopped recruiting the QB position. I had a dad of another of the QB prospects that we had offered tell me that a few months back. That of course could be subject to change ...

That was my feeling Sly.

If you think about it, here is our QB situation going into next year

Josh Woodrum
Brian Hudson
Javan Shashaty
Stephon Masha

Woodrum and Hudson will go in as the 1-2 in spring ball and that will probably carry into the summer unless Shashaty absolutely lights it up in spring practice. Even if we did sign him, he would have to essentially pass at least three other QBs to see the field as a true freshman

Im not shocked that DD is out. Tennessee really hasnt been able to recapture the kind of success that they had when Peyton Manning and Tee Martin were the guys leading the way on Rocky Top. Really if you are in the SEC and you arent pulling in 9 and 10 win seasons and competing for national championships, fans are practically getting their pitchforks and storming the ADs office calling for your job.
Are we back?

Nice! Here is to hoping we can live bot free.
