Fan the Flames 2012 Spring Outlook Part 3: WR

Took a break for the last few weeks because of work and graduation but gonna try and get through one of these a week from now until training camp so let's jump right back in with probably the biggest need outside of QB on the offense:

Players Lost

Chris Summers 64 catches 1,014 yards 7 TDs Liberty all time leader in catches, TDs and yards
Ervin Garner 18 catches 181 yards 1 TD
BJ Hayes 28 catches 306 Yards 1 TD

Players Returning

Ryan Ferguson 9 catches 148 yards 1 TD
Pat Kelly 40 catches 591 yards 3 TD
Elliot Dutra No 2011 stats
Branden Francis No 2011 stats
JaQuan Glover No 2011 stats
Christian Griffith No 2011 stats

The Flames lose some pretty big names at the wideout position, especially Summers who now owns every receiving record at Liberty. He took his talents to the Chicago Bears, BJ Hayes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for rookie camp. It'll be Pat Kelly's turn at the number 1 receiver position, and despite a nagging hamstring injury, he still added to his number of TDs of 50 yards or more in 2011. If he can stay healthy, he is going to be someone teams will need to pay attention to, which could open up chances for guys like Ryan Ferguson or one of the incoming freshmen should any of them make their way into the starting lineup.

Look for Gabe Henderson and Dante Shells to start along with Kelly. If one of them goes downhill then it is time for the true freshmen to come in (Peterson, Faison, and others). Ferguson and Dutra could get some backup time. Is Pratts move to DB for good now or is that just experiental? I would have thought that he would be in the mix due to his speed.

Im not sure on Pratt...Henderson could be very similar to BJ Hayes at WR ( primarily in the slot with a few motion plays designed for him) and I wouldnt be surprised if they used his QB skills for a play similar to the one MB and Summers had, especially with a guy like PK who can pretty much drop one for 50+ any time even while he was battling injury last year as I noted.

I'll be looking at the freshmen when I do my training camp previews later in the summer but I would not be surprised if one or even two of them worked their way into the rotation

So are we calling this part 2 because the other our part 2 (running backs) are really non-existent? If so, this is a great column.

Im Sch14 and I still compensate for my own shortcomings by trying to criticize BJ even though he has a hotter girl than I do and I only wish I shared in his awesomeness

I'm quoting this so you can never claim you never said something this ridiculous.

It will be interesting to see how the depth chart looks at WR this year.

Speaking of depth chart, Lang did you ever get your hands on one post-spring ball?

Back to WR, Kelly will definitely be our main guy. I have to think Gabe will be in the rotation as well. I also believe 1 or 2 true freshman will be in the regular rotation. Should be an interesting development this summer and fall.

Youd be surprised how coaches will try to gain any advantage, no matter how miniscule. when it comes to game planning for an opponent (see Spygate)

Itll be interesting to see how PK does as the feature guy. I was going back through some highlights and he certainly has shown he can stretch the field (I think he has 5 TDs of 50+ yards including a 75 yard one in his first game in a Flames uniform)
