LYNCHBURG – Liberty football coach Turner Gill said quarterbacks redshirt-junior Brian Hudson and redshirt-freshman Josh Woodrum of Cave Spring High School will take a majority of the repetitions in fall practice and will battle for the starting job.

Gill made the comment during his Big South teleconference Tuesday morning.

Hudson was nearly as highly regarded out of high school and looked much better in the spring game. If he's been better in practices as well, the job should be his.

The Spring Game means nothing  It's merely a show for the fans. I guarantee you that's the least intense practice of the Spring.

Thankfully you're not a coach.

ha, that's where you're wrong. i don't coach liberty but i coach football. i also know a lot of the coaches, some on liberty, and almost no coach puts any effort into the spring game. especially gill. i've talked to several of the football players and he's running that ship tighter than a mental hospital. he isn't going to give one thing away at a public spring football game.

it would make a ton of sense that with closed practices that he would play a VERY vanilla spring game.

*tin foil hat time*
what if he had the QB's play bad on purpose (give them no good plays, very predictable, defense knows exactly what there gonna do) so everyone underestimates us in the fall?

I am actually shocked by the quarterback decision, but I can tell you with absolute certainty (as well as others who know and posted in other threads) that the spring was in fact nothing like the spring practice as a whole. The offense was nothing like the real thing, and, even though they played extremely well, neither was the defense.

The coaches all aloong have said that the best player is going to play no matter their status (senior, scholly, walk on etc). It appears that they are holding to that. It is refreshing to see. DR had is players locked in from day one

I don't remember Hudson being as highly regarded as Woodrum.

I'm surprised at Tyler being "eliminated" so early in the process, especially with a new coach on the horizon. I wondered if this would have been the case even if Rocco had stayed?

I don't think anyone remembers Hudson being that highly regarded, probably because he wasn't. Notajerry has some beef with all pocket first QB's and is likely dropping all of his allegiance with Liberty if Woodrum starts.

As for Tyler, the time he played last year(which I think was one game plus several late game subs), he didn't look that great. He seems to throw behind the receiver a lot and his decision making isn't the best. He could develop nicely but I think Gill is looking for the most talent at this position and that would come from Woodrum or Hudson.

I'm just glad that Gill has made the cut to two. The last thing you want heading into a season is a QB battle. At least this way, Gill is making a statement that he wants this settled soon. Ideally, we know the starter by mid-way through training camp.

Probably not. Rocco had pretty much set Brennon up as his "quarterback in waiting". I think it would have taken something extreme for him to move away from that.

Woodrum and Hudson were both 2 star recruits according to Rivals. Woodrum did get the offer from Wake Forest, but that was it from FBS schools. Their "interested" schools list is pretty similar with Hudson getting looks from places like UVA, VT, UConn, and NC State. Woodrum was slightly more highly regarded, but Hudson played very well at what is a quickly ascending program just north of Fredericksburg.
