From Chris in the fishwrap:
LU Notebook: Flames will turn to Beasley when they need three points

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
September 5, 2006

Ben Beasley will take over all of Liberty's field-goal kicking duties starting Saturday against Glenville State, LU coach Danny Rocco said Tuesday.

Beasley replaces Zac Kolegue, who missed a 26-yarder in LU's 27-0 win against Saint Paul's last Thursday. Kolegue also missed an extra point, but he'll remain LU's option for point after attempts.

Before the PAT miss Thursday, Kolegue connected on 34 consecutive attempts.

Beasley connected on a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Neither kicker hit from longer than 27 yards in 2005.

"He's really had the better camp," Rocco said of Beasley. "He's looked very poised, very confident and very mature. We're going to move forward this way for the next part of our season, and if we have to make more adjustments, we will."

Beasley will continue his duties as Liberty's punter and kickoff man.

Hopefully this will work out. I think it will. We definitely can't leave points on the field in the kicking game if we are to beat the likes of W&M, Coastal, etc.

Hopefully the coaching staff hasn't given up on Zach. Hard to judge someone's performance in that kind of weather but remember what happened last year.

It doesn't sound at all like the staff is writing off Zac. Quite the contrary. It sounds like they are encouraging both guys to earn their opportunities. This staff is basing their decisions on what they have seen in camp & Game One. You can't blame them for making this move or reverting back should Ben not be the answer on FGs.

i am willing to try anything at this point....the kicking game has struggled...i hope they continue to work with them throughout the year. I am hoping for improvements, but I think we just need new kickers...I am sure they guys are good guys and all, but we need a new one....but that isn't happening this year, so we have to make the best with what we've got

May the best man win the job. I am sure getting a kicker was not on Coach Rocco's list of priorities when he came in here. He had more important things to attend to.

That is true Steve, but this year coming up, he should be able to focus more on specific areas, i.e. kickers. So, hopefully by next year he will have a good kicker recruited into the system.

yeah, kickers aren't the top priority when you take on a program that was 1-10 the year before....but i am sure it will come in time....the little things take a little longer to develop

i agree it was probably not a high priority, but i hope that the guys will improve, and they recruit a kicker for next year.

It should be noted that these two young men are buried in the roster:

26 David Drake P/K R-Freshman 5-10 175 Louisville, Ky.

28 Doug Barbosa K Freshman 6-0 175 Naples, Fla.
