I am a little disappointed about dropping Rutgers. But to look on the bright side it was a game that most likely would have been a blowout and would have hurt confidence and there would have been a chance of getting some people hurt. Considering the situation we are in right now, Wake Forest should be the only 1A we should play next year until we can build a competitive team. Hopefully can get some respectable team on our schedule to replace Rutgers such as a team from the Southern or Colonial conference no matter how good they are.

They need to get serious and get App. State on that schedule or Furman.

We're not in App St or Furman's league yet. We have a young team. Get some decent teams, middle of the pack SoCon or middle of the pack CAA, teams we can compete against. Winning those games or playing well in those games would build confidence going into the Big South schedule. The main goal right now would have to be win the Big South. You hafta start small. Coastal was a good team and it was shown this year that they were nowhere near App's level. There's absolutely no point in playing the really good teams and getting blown out.

I'm sure it wasn't easy walking away from the guarantee money, but I understand fully why Coach Rocco wouldn't want to deal with two I-As right out of the chutes.

I'm also curious who we will fill the hole in the schedule with this far into the scheduling game.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for the Rutgers/LU classic. Years. Years! I even scheduled time off from work so that I could go to that game! I planned my vacation nine months in advance! No one does that unless they're getting married!

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank Rocco, if you don't win the Big South next year... you're on my list.

Geez, if we replace Rutgers with some D-II school, I'll be REALLY upset.

My guess is we will replace them with a MEAC school. Just a hunch.

I guess I am glad to see us get a 70 point loss off our schedule. Build a little confidence, first.

Smooth, I spoke to Mickey today as well and he said that Rutgers being dropped isn't a sure thing just yet, and that Paul Rutigliano was handling the scheduling. I understand why Rocco would want to drop the game (at Towson, at Rutgers, at Wake is a BRUTAL stretch for a rebuilding program), but we'll have to see what the deal is with the contract that was signed (or not signed). There is some thought that it was a verbal agreement between the schools and no contract was ever signed.

I'm talking with Rocco later this week, so I'll fill everyone in.

Thanks for the clarification. We have taken some grief in recent years for backing out of agreements. But if no contracts were signed and there was a change in management, it would be hard for Rutgers to complain.

I've been one of the proponents of playing D1 schools, honestly- probably more for the money and exposure than anything else (how much useful experience can ya get out of a 59 pt loss?) - but maybe a legitimate shot at starting 2-2 is what these guys need right now.

Could build a LOT of confidence heading into conf play. All the same, I have full confidence in Coach Rocco and his staff to have these guys ready to surpise a lot of people next year.

I am a huge proponent of playing the big names. You build a program with money, and money comes from being a 70 point loss darling. Also, you get exposure on ESPN and other media outlets to get your name out there.

Do you really think the kids lose that much confidence playing up to better competition? Playing against a higher level of competition can only make the team better. Ya, we may get drubbed by 70 in the first game, but lets just say we only get it by 40 in the next and 20 in the next. The guys raise their game because they are playing a higher level of competition and we are getting paid. Do you really think kids come to play football at LU so they can play Glenville St or to have a shot at an ACC or Big East team? I know they arent coming to play in the glorious Big South. True athletes want to compete against the best (or at least a high level of competition).

I agree...take the money and do your best to avoid the 10 touchdown loss...that's my theory.

Does anyone with a degree or first hand information know what a game with a team like Rutgers is worth in dollars to LU? I can agree with the theory that we get some cash by making the trip and serving as a whipping post but how much cash? Is it really even worth it from that perspective?

This is an educated guess, but I think we get between $50,000 - $100,000. I am not sure if we share gate, but I think this is close.....

Yes, Rutgers is a cash game. No, I don't care.

===NEWS FLASH===

We went 0-10 last year (D-II games don't count). We don't have the luxury of saying "well, let's play this team instead of that team, because we'll get smoked by the first team." Since we suck, we'll get smoked by pretty much any football team outside of Seven-Eleven State. Might as well pad the pockets doing so.

UConn was worth closer to 150K, I think. Rutgers would probably pay around 200K.

I know Arizona and Arizona State each paid Northern Arizona around $350K to play. Georgia paid Boise State close to $600K.

Nice chunk of change as long you you don't get any injuries and are ready to play come conference time.

You can get a pretty nice judge of what the tale will be based on what a school draws. That tells you how much jack they are collecting from the gate which in turn is passed on to the visitors in the form of a guarantee.

Chris' guess seems in line with what I would estimate. Now if VT were to bring us over they pay MUCH more because they know they'll have a sellout regardless of who is the opponent. So they have a much deeper pool of cash to dip into.
