A Sea Of Red

I saw a post on the basketball forum, so id figure we give it a shot on here. I believe there was a old one in previous years, but I figured after this graduated class, minds have changed! I listed the position and amount of players at each position.... GO!

WR - James McKnight
TE - Dwayne Carswell or Eric Green. I'm guessing Green, but never saw him play.
RB - Jennings
WR - Mike Brown (He was good, but not sure he was the best true QB we have ever had) Does anyone remember Childress?
DL - Vince Redd
FB - Butch Jennings

I believe his name was Antwan Childs, (probably spelled it wrong), he was a transfer from Florida, wore #8. He was the best QB that I remember seeing going all the way back to 73. . There will be some who will name Robbie Justino, he was pretty good, but not the best in my opinion. I would rather have Mike Brown. Eric Green was much better than Carswell.

Antwan Chiles. He was a monster. Transferred in from Florida after losing a spring football battle for QB to Danny Wuerffel. He was head and shoulders above anyone else I've seen as LU QB. He was ahead of his time in the athleticism and strong arm combination.

Yeah that's the guy. Hands down best true QB - big and rocket arm. I only say him, because if he and Mike Brown were on the team together - Brown would be playing WR - 99% sure of that.

99% is too low. Chiles was a poor man's Daunte Culpepper. Brown was a poor man's Hines Ward.

It's amazing he was behind Terry Dean (I thought it was Wuerfful) and that he turned down schools like Notre Dame, Nebraska, Miami and Tennessee. I'd say he's still the biggest name prospect to ever play a down for LU.

Looking through the record books, and thinking back to games in the 93-98 range, 3 names are really coming back to me as far as being in the discussion.

RB Lawrence Worthington. He wasn't a guy who got a look from pro scouts, and he didn't seem to have any one great attribute, but he's got a bunch of spots in the record books with things like a 305 yard game and two 4 rushing TD games.

WR/S Robert Butz. This kid would get switched between positions almost weekly it seemed, and sometimes during the same game. Kind of our FCS version of a Troy Brown or Julian Edelman.

KR/PR Andrew McFadden. Handled the duties for both jobs for a couple of years and was a threat to go all the way every time he touched the ball.

I don't know the teams before the mid-2000s so I can only speak for teams since then with any "authority."

I don't think he's the starter on the all-time team, but I think where Brock Smith ended up makes him the #1 coming out of the 2000's.

Rashad's there as the RB but Dre Barnes would be 1A.

Mike Godsil is the starting center.

Bevins is the kicker and Larsson is the punter.

Kelvin Edwards is definitely there as a wide receiver. I'd put Mike Brown and Chris Summers there as well. You could make a case for Wynton.

Wynton would definitely make the list as punt returner.

Bolden or Fogg would be your kick returners.

Manny would be a linebacker.

That's all I can think of right now.

The Chiles discussion intrigues me. Is this a list of the best athletes or best production at position?

I'm still trying to figure out jow this thread could last this long with no mention of Wayne Haddix.

Love Wayne Haddix - I'm a big bucs fan, but never saw or heard of anything he did at LU. For all I know he was OK at LU and was much better in the pros. Got a chance and took it.

Antwan Chiles was the most talented at his position and had a canon for an arm, by far the best I have seen at LU. His supporting cast was not so good especially on defense. Those were tough years financially for the university and I am sure football recruiting was scaled back a bit and that is why Antwan never reached his true potential.

He had offensive support. The defense was awful those days, but the offense had James McKnight, Dwayne Carswell and Lawrence Worthington. Chiles still put up pretty big numbers despite McKnight having the same hands of stone in college he had in the NFL, Worthington eating up a ton of the offense, and the defense never being able to get off the field. Coach Rut was also much more willing to tone it down/bench his starters early against clearly overmatched opponents than someone like Rocco who seemed to leave MB in no matter what.

There's the OL I was drawing a blank on. I believe he spent 2 years on the Colts practice squad.

I'm drawing a blank on who the Seahawks center was that played for us under Coach Rutigliano.

And James' had a few decent years in the NFL. Unfortunately he was wrapping things up when I covered him with the Cowboys.

The other DB that was strong back in the Hout era was Mark Mathis.

I have nothing pre-Hout. HarrisburgFlame would be a good source if he ever stops back by.

Robbie Tobeck. Spent one redshirt year at LU, then transferred out and ended up starting at Washington State for 2 seasons.

Couple guys come to mind from the Dowling years -LB Sanders (Jon I think), was an outstanding guy in the middle. Spent some time in the Cowboys camp, not sure if he ever was on the squad. He was also Colonel Sanders' (yes that one) nephew or something. Also, Bill Kagey was a pretty good kicker who also had a tryout with the pros. And don't forget Mark DeMoss either. He was automatic at the PATs and even had range out to 50+.
