I heard from a friend who has connections that Bobby Bowden has interest in the job.

I really hope this is a joke.

Well since we're seriously talking about Turner Gill, I thought I'd share a couple of my jokes too.

Is this how we play this one?

I like that Gill falls under multiple categories of a "big name" and a guy that is still relatively young and an up and comer.
I'd much rather invest in a coach like this, rather than a big name that will be here for 3-4 years, draw a lot of buzz for the program, collect a paycheck, and leave/retire.
I think a big name would be a great short term move, but I think a young "up and comer" would be better long term. Gill is both!

I agree that he is still a bit of an unproven commodity as a head coach. He did a fantastic job at Buffalo followed by a mess in Lawrence. To be fair, that was a horrible place for him to land so early in his career. Frankly I could see him being VERY interested in what we have to offer as a program.

You're right, it's kind of scary when you look at his line:
Buffalo Bulls (Mid-American Conference) (2006–2009)
2006 Buffalo 2–10 1–7 6th (East)
2007 Buffalo 5–7 5–3 T–1st (East)
2008 Buffalo 8–6 5–3 1st (East) L International
2009 Buffalo 5–7 3–5 5th (East)
Buffalo: 20–30 14–18
Kansas Jayhawks (Big 12 Conference) (2010–2011)
2010 Kansas 3–9 1–7 6th (North)
2011 Kansas 2–10 0–9 10th
Kansas: 5–19 1–16
Total: 25–49
His time at Kansas is definitely discouraging, especially with Mangino getting to the Orange Bowl just two years before Gill came aboard. Kansas' defense was the WORST in the country this year, but Gill is obviously an offensive guy. What he did at Buffalo was pretty impressive though, given where that program was.

A bit unproven?
3 years of 3 wins or less.
6 total seasons with only 1 winning season.
The one winning season was followed by another losing season before inexplicably getting the job at Kansas.
He's not a good head coach.

Considering defense was/is our shortcoming, this makes a guy who hasn't won anything an even worse option.
Kansas gave up 40+ 7 times this year. 60+ 3 times. 70+ once.
I just don't get the fascination with the guy.

I don't understand your point? Danny was a defensive guy, how did that work out? I'm not going to pretend to know what happened at Kansas b/c I don't know. It could've been a situation where he was set up to fail and didn't have a good DC.
But just observing his W-L and the scores of his games (especially as an offensive guy) shouldn't make you automatically dismiss him as a HC. Big 12 is a special brand of offensive football (especially this year) it seems to me Gill didn't have the right personnel.

Seriously? He's 82. I wouldn't take him if he was 72. We need to go beyond name recognition at this point.

82? OK - maybe not. He was a good coach at one time. Didn't realize he was that old.

The Kansas thing was a horrible situation as he took over after every player with ability left cuz of Mangino (he was beating them or something). He than couldn't get anyone to stay healthy this year. That's part of it but it's not like he walked into a school with anything going for it in the football relm. Think of Duke trying to compete in a much better FB conference.
As for Buffallo what he did was amazing. I wish he had more of a track record but I'd be happy with the hire. I know I'm biased.

I'm not going to lie...for whatever reason I've always been a fan of TG.
Actually, no....I thought I was a fan. I'm a fan of Tyrone Willingham (sp?)... apparently that's a different guy

I think we're all forgetting that a 3 win season at Buffalo was a ground breaking achievement.
IMO he's not coming this far down, but I'll gladly entertain a thread regarding his candidacy

So, when are we seriously going to discuss coaching candidates? Cause this all is joke.

Turner Gill is a very viable candidate but perhaps not the best candidate.

agree with Sly. what Gill did at buffalo was incredible. that program was in the crapper forever. the Kansas gig, i still shake my head at why he took it, but i could see this candidate being a nice fit at LU.

Nobody. I actually like to take time and think about the situation and the needs of our program, rather than bark out names of coaches who we know will not coach at the FCS level.
I have always liked Kansas basketball. Not love, but I've always followed them, but I do remember the year Kan
. Turner Gill won the MAC division. Even with crappy players that's not hard to do. A 8 win season in the MAC? Wow what an accomplishment. Especially when you are playing the brutal likes of Eastern Michigan ever Saturday. Or even worse... Kent State.
I'm not saying I don't like the guy.
But I know how it is. I'm not allowed to have an opinion unless I truly think Urban Meyer is leaving OSU to come coach at Liberty. After all, he is a family man.
