Kentucky Wesleyan Post-Mortem

57-0 is about what was expected. Great to see Poindexter get that TD.

2 blocked PATs and 2 more line drives were NOT expected

LIKES:
+ Tommy Shaver
+ Mike Connolly
+ Hudson
+ Des Rice (other than the stupid roughing penalty)
+ SCH/Korrey Davis

DISLIKES:
- Brennan (in fairness, just underwhelming, not outright awful)
- PENALTIES
- Kacere

Not bad for a scrimmage, but things would have looked very different against a team like G-W. I don't think winning out in the BS is a lock.

nah, GW is bad/young, SB is an unknown but trending down, CSU is gawd-awful, & VMI is VMI

if you want to worry, worry about:

#1: CCU
#2: Presby if we pull our annual conferance head-in-rectum game

Missed this one completely knowing if I have to sacrifice a game for my wife this would be the best option. Glad so many guys got the opportunity to see the field. Moving right along ...

not sure if I believe 15,782 showed up to watch that.

I think there were @ 782 on the Baptist side at the end tho...

student side looked pretty good tonight throughout- whatever they did to motivate those kids this year is working.

So is it safe to say that penalties are an inherent problem for this team? Many on this board have said if it were not for penalties we would have beat Lehigh JMU and probably NC State. Penalties reflect a lack of discipline. How can we be so undisciplined even against a CupCake?!

I'd say a couple were committed by over anxious 3rd and 4th stringers trying to make an impression, and one defensive pass interference that was sorta weak.

but that doesnt explain everything.

disappointing for sure.

Are you referring to Kejaun's?

that one was pretty clearcut. I was talking to a guy right next to me when it happened and we were in agreement that it was a good call.

I agree with PA in that a few of the penalties came from guys who dont see the field a lot so I think that is less an issue of lack of discipline and more a lack of game experience.

On the post-game interview, Coach Rocco blamed the missed PATs on the new holder, since Mike Brown wasn't back there.

I could see some validity to that...Wasnt it Hudson back there holding tonight?

I like the all red uniforms though I think Red with Blue pants and White helmets would be ideal. Thoughts? Good game though hopefully this will get the team back into winning form.

Please tell me some of you were there early enough to see the giant inflatable helmet take off. I am doing my practicum with Sport Marketing and help out in kid zone and was one of the people chasing it down the hill.

Sirchauncey Holloway scored a career-best four touchdowns to help the Flames to a 57-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.

Liberty will head into Big South play following its seventh shutout under head coach Danny Rocco, as the Flames blanked visiting Kentucky Wesleyan, 57-0, Saturday night inside of Williams Stadium.

The victory was an historic one for the Flames, as it marked the 200th time the Flames have posted a win on the gridiron since the program first began competition in 1973.

With the victory, the Flames move to 2-3 on the year, having won their last four non-conference tune-ups before opening up Big South Conference play. Kentucky Wesleyan remains winless on the year and falls to 0-5 in 2011.

This is the second straight year and third time in the Danny Rocco era that Liberty has come off back to back losses and destroyed the next opponent. last year it was Savannah State, and then in 2007 Liberty whomped St Francis 68-10 after back to back losses to Elon and William & Mary. 2006 (Danny Rocco's first year) LU lost 4 in a row then ended with three straight wins all by double figures

The first six plays of Liberty’s 57-0 rout of Division II Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday night at Williams Stadium were pretty similar.

Sirchauncey Holloway on a counter. Holloway off tackle right. Holloway on a dive play straight up the gut. The Flames were facing an inferior opponent, and coach Danny Rocco knew getting some sort of run game going was paramount to the team’s ultimate goal of winning the Big South championship and advancing to the FCS playoffs for the first time.]Click Here for Full Story

Liberty coach Danny Rocco had a specific substitution pattern in mind for Saturday’s game with Kentucky Wesleyan, and he stuck with the plan he set out with earlier in the week. He said he would put second- and third-stringers into the game early and often, regardless of the score, and it was clear that he kept his word early in the second quarter when No. 3 quarterback Brian Hudson made an appearance.

Hudson was the Flames’ most effective quarterback Saturday, going 10-for-12 for 104 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran four times for 22 yards.

“He showed some poise,” Rocco said.

Me and Julie were in the Flamesclub tent when the helmet took off. We saw it from there. We saw the people chasing it down the hill. What was funnier was there was one person at the bottom near the visitor locker room that for a second it looked like he thought he was going to be a hero and was running towards it to try and stop it from the bottom...but then as it got closer he decided to just get out of the way at the last second.

I'd probably run away from a 20 foot inflatable helmet rolling down the hill at me, too!

I do think there were over 15,000 people there at the beginning...the bottom of the baptist side was pretty full until halftime.

The only other thing about that game...LU's punt was crazy. It's bounced to the punter...he pickes it up and there is no one around him...then it's like he's just strolling across the field before he punts it...the advantage was all of our coverage was already down there, and they stop it inside the 5.

To BURY, yep there is another kicker on the team who clearly needs to be given a shot at the extra points at least!! Those kicks tonight, and there were several, were ridiculous and indicative of someone with a strong leg with no technique, thus the lack of lift. Rocco's comments are wrong. I watched those kicks and several more of the extra points and the FG would have been blocked by a better, more physical team, that knows how to block a kick. Blame one on the holder, but all of them? That kind of lack of lift is on the kicker, not the holder. To answer your original question? I wrote about him earlier..John McConnell. Heard about him when he transfered in last January from Buffalo. Looked him up after hearing from a friend who saw his bio. Comes from the same high school, West Springfield, that produced Jeremy Kapinos-Penn State-Steelers, Josh Czkowski-NC State kicker(just finished)and Tyler Bitencurt-WVA current kicker. Bio lists that McConnell was All-District and All-Region in junior & senior seasons after Bitencurt graduated. Broke school scoring record for one season for kickers junior year with 87 points,(60 XP's and 9 FG's, went 18-22 in FG's during 2 varsity years). Honorable Mention All-Met(Washington Post) and 2nd Team All-State in senior season. All-Game Day team and described by them as best pure kicker in northern Virginia area. Confirmed that VAPreps put him on 2nd Team All-Decade for Northern Virginia. Have watched him warm-up at the last couple of home games...great lift with near perfect rotation on the ball. Kacere appears to have slightly stronger leg, but that's not what the team needs. If Bevins is not coming back soon, then we need to use someone who is an actual placekicker, not someone with a strong leg that just kicks and lacks technique!!!

totally saw the giant inflatable helmet go flying, along with half of the megaphone things they put in the stadium. that was hilarious. the punt play was also hilarious. Ive never seen a broken play work out that well ever. its like they weren't even trying to get to the punter on that play.

Beej, you snuck this in hoping I wouldn't catch it weren't you? :D

What do savannah state, st. Francis all have in common?

That's right, they suck.

As for this game, and my thoughts on it, I think Dennis Green sums it up best. "They were who we thought they were."

Major Harris (WVU) vs. Penn State, 1988. It's now referred to simply as "The Play.". Look it up on YouTube.

Can I not get a few props for my Brennan comments? Why aren't we arguing today why Brennan is better than Mike Brown? Did everyone see what I see last night? If he was ready top take reigns next year he would have dominated last night - I could have thrown for 140/1 against that team. Yes Haize, I could have gone NFL if BJ was my coach...

I think Brennan did well...had a couple bad throws but a pretty decent job...of course as DR said, he was gonna switch it up a lot anyway so I wasnt going to expect much in the way of gaudy stats. Hudson did a pretty good job too. Be interesting to see if we make any progress with the running game next week with MB coming back

The point of it was not to get you to not notice my overly analytical friend...but to show that we come off back to back losses well...and if Im not mistaken CSU was a pretty good team when we pounded them in 2006
