I don't often post topics and usually just read through everyone else's statements but felt I needed to comment on the subject posted. I traveled many hours south for the JMU game two weeks ago and was blown away with the atmosphere; what an experience! The pre-game, game and even the post-game was that of a big class college football program. I felt I was part of something extraordinary. As an LU Alumni, of the earlier 2000’s it blew me away! Of course, I understand the stadium expansion creates a more worthwhile experience but all the little things supersede just the expansion itself. It was awesome to see how the marching band is now a respected part of the entire game experience; the 12th man is a great way of having the students directly involved with the game as well as the LU chant and hype up to game time. I was equally impressed with how much tailgating there was. I don’t remember seeing one tailgater during my years. Then again, I wasn’t really looking.
Now, I must say I attended last Saturday’s loss to Lehigh. While I expected to witness a similar game experience to that of the JMU game, I was shockingly disappointed at the entire production and enthusiasm of the Lehigh University Football experience. For a current high ranked team in the FCS in addition to being homecoming week, the atmosphere was pathetic. Yes, pathetic! First off; I don’t recall more than a few hundred students in the stands. The stadium was not full, and the excitement for the team was no-existent. From the 50% effort of getting the crowd involved, to the lackluster of their mascot, I find it hard to believe this stadium was voted for the best family atmosphere in the Patriot league. However, I give kudos to the little bitty cannon that would go off whenever they scored, but that was nothing as the thing was so small I could barely see it from the stands; although I did hear it!
Needless to say, great job Liberty on creating an amazing Saturday college football experience. You really have changed the culture of the football experience at Liberty and I continue to be proud as I see the program shining brighter and brighter on the national scene of college football.
