I don't often post topics and usually just read through everyone else's statements but felt I needed to comment on the subject posted. I traveled many hours south for the JMU game two weeks ago and was blown away with the atmosphere; what an experience! The pre-game, game and even the post-game was that of a big class college football program. I felt I was part of something extraordinary. As an LU Alumni, of the earlier 2000’s it blew me away! Of course, I understand the stadium expansion creates a more worthwhile experience but all the little things supersede just the expansion itself. It was awesome to see how the marching band is now a respected part of the entire game experience; the 12th man is a great way of having the students directly involved with the game as well as the LU chant and hype up to game time. I was equally impressed with how much tailgating there was. I don’t remember seeing one tailgater during my years. Then again, I wasn’t really looking.

Now, I must say I attended last Saturday’s loss to Lehigh. While I expected to witness a similar game experience to that of the JMU game, I was shockingly disappointed at the entire production and enthusiasm of the Lehigh University Football experience. For a current high ranked team in the FCS in addition to being homecoming week, the atmosphere was pathetic. Yes, pathetic! First off; I don’t recall more than a few hundred students in the stands. The stadium was not full, and the excitement for the team was no-existent. From the 50% effort of getting the crowd involved, to the lackluster of their mascot, I find it hard to believe this stadium was voted for the best family atmosphere in the Patriot league. However, I give kudos to the little bitty cannon that would go off whenever they scored, but that was nothing as the thing was so small I could barely see it from the stands; although I did hear it!

Needless to say, great job Liberty on creating an amazing Saturday college football experience. You really have changed the culture of the football experience at Liberty and I continue to be proud as I see the program shining brighter and brighter on the national scene of college football.

Go Flames!

I saw on TV that Lehigh had a BELL that they would ring every so often. How loud was that, and would a "Liberty Bell" be a a good addition to our LU stadium?

Good, let the graduating class this year buy the bell as a class gift to LU.

My recommendation: more BELLS and fewer flagpoles. 8)

No one is posting the I need more cowbell clip? Really? (I would but don't know how)
SFID - I caution u on your observation. The JMU game was a special event and delivered everything it promised. I would hazard a guess that if you attended this weekends game the atmosphere may more closely resemble what you saw at Lehigh. The JMU game was electric and an atmosphere that I can't wait to see week in and week out. It was like an all natural high

As for the Bell, that idea has been around for awhile and I never understood why it has never been embraced. I don't think Philly has a copyright on Liberty Bell but I'm sure our top notch legal team could look into it. I would like to go one step further. I say we run it out like the Boomer Sooner, The Boiler Drum, the Colorado Buffalo etc. Make it our brand. Have a big caisson with a huge bell on it with two people just wailing on it. Plus, it would have the added bonus of ending a pre game music debate!

Ehh. The sound that one makes when you ring it isn't very full. Not that I (or anyone on the track team) would know anything about that...

I was actually waiting for YOU to post the Texas Tech bell ringer video. Thanks for showing restraint on that one.

Hey PHaze:

You are right; I am sure not all games are alike! My post was not specific to just the JMU game but to highlight that I was impressed with what has been done to improve the game atmosphere. Oh, and we do need more Cowbell, lots more cowbell...

The entire bell idea would be amazing. Just imagine some gargantuan bell sitting at the corner of the endzone just waiting to be hit with a huge mallot by Sparky every time we score. It would add another element to the entire experience as well as be something totally new. I don't know of any other school having anything of the sorts, does anyone else? Let's make it happen. Who says we can't have our own aka "LU" Bell.

If Lehigh had a bell I must have mistaken it for my cell phone.... I don't recall a bell ringing during the game.

They were playing intro to AC/DC "Hells Bells" over their (weak) sound system prior to each 3rd down. Lame.

they did. Just around or on the 50 yd line on their sideline behind the bench. The cheerleaders rang it after each score, I believe- the number coincided with the points on the board.

IIRC. I was irritated at the time and had trouble concentrating.

Alan York wrote:@libertyflames fans, would a loud "eagle screech" on the music system before defensive 3rd downs be cool or obnoxious? Taking votes now
I do like the creative thinking but all you have to do is hear the Temple Owl "screech" after 1st downs, etc, ONE TIME to know this is gawd-awful

I am sure they are talking about adding the sound of the red tailed hawk and not a bald eagle. Go to the link listed below to hear the difference between the two. The bald eagle call would be a terrible sound to play. The sound of a red tailed hawk would be a bad addition for other reasons.

Flames (team name) ------> Sparky (Eagle mascot) -------> Shrill of a red tailed hawk :dontgetit

Someone replied to York with the idea of playing the chorus of Tip's LU during 3rd downs instead. IDK if any of you were at the NC State game last year, but when we just chanted LU semi-slowly it was heck-a-loud! I had friends from State tell me that it was impressive. Anything that would prevent fans and students from jingling their stupid keys on third downs would be great!

I loke the bald eagle shreek. If you are an opposing team that would cause you to soil your pants. lol. I say that mixed with flapping wings and crackling flames. Then add the LU chant and stir.

Id go with the bald eagle shriek and then the music we played the last couple years. The shriek would be a good cue for the fans

You're missing the point, BJ. Bald eagles do not shriek. They sound more like "tweety bird".
