Feel free to move this to Non-LU sports, but it is so directly tied to LU Football I put it here.

Possible FCS rule changes could take effect as soon as the 2012 season include playoff exapansion and elimination of red-shirts.

Last fall, the FCS playoff field expanded for the first time since 1987, growing from 16 to 20 participants. This week, a newly formed FCS Presidents Leadership Group will convene in Indianapolis with a proposal to expand the playoff bracket once more, this time to 24 teams.

Another rule-change proposal that would give FCS athletes five years of eligibility - effectively eliminating a redshirt season - has been submitted to the NCAA. The legislation, drafted and heavily promoted by Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager, would go into effect in 2012 if approved.

I love both of these changes. How can you not like 4 more playoff spots? It doesn't change anything with the current playoffs - still 8 byes. It only adds 2 more games to the opening round.

As for the 5 years, I love this too. Imagine having Mike Brown for 5 years. Chris Summers for 5 years. Not having to RS Gabe Henderson this year. Keep Grant Jones for 5 years. It would be wonderful. If a kid's ready to play his true freshman season, let him play. Don't have to worry about RS or injuries.

Also, this 5 year rule would be only for FCS, not FBS. That's a huge recruiting pitch to guys who are on the fence as to an FBS or FCS school.

The bigger conferences should be in favor of the expanded playoffs. it allows for more of their teams to make the playoffs even with .500 records especially after beating each other up in conference play.

I can't see this 5 year thing flying. Isn't 4 years in a 5 year span an NCAA rule over every sport? Plus it would completely change the FCS dynamic. Every good team would be made up of a ton of 5th year FBS transfers. It'd be similar to the 1 and done style of Calipari basketball.

I'm sure they would do something to not allow transfers from FBS for only the 5th year after they've played 4.

I'm assuming it would be the same as the transfer rule now - you can gain a 5th year of eligibility if you transfer to a grad program that your current school doesn't offer.

5 years seems like a long time... seems like it would cause more "turnover", you'll want to keep your stars longer, but you'll have to "let go" players, to free up scholarships for new talent also.
The "average non-superstar" players would really start seeing some heat to leave the program.
College ball always seems new and exciting each year with new players... it would become more like the NFL, with dynastys and like others said alot of trading too...
