I have been to several away games over the past few years. On the rare occassion I see a Liberty shirt, and a beer/ mikes hard lemonade, what have you. This is not a question of is it okay to drink. I am interested in your opinion , Is drinking at away games wearing a Liberty shirt frowned upon by the majority of you?

For me it would be, if youre wearing Liberty gear, then as a fan, youre just as much a representative of the school as the coaches, players, cheerleaders, administrators etc. I mean we are all adults and therefore ought can make adult decisions, but you have to be mindful of how you are perceived by people you come in contact with.

I'd probably "frown" on it, but not to the point I would confront someone about it.

I have no problem with it. Agree with BYD it only becomes a problem if they are trashed.

I mean if they still are attending LU it'd be a problem. Otherwise, I don't see it as that big of a deal as long as they aren't drunk.

As I said, Id frown on it but we are adults for the most part, and ought to be able to make adult decisions. If they are current students like NG mentioned, and they arent 21 (and you know it), then of course Id say something (a call to OSC on Monday morning would be in order), otherwise Id frown on it but Im not going to walk up to them, stick a finger in their chest and berate them for it.

If they're of age and not a student then I have no problem with them having a drink.

If they're a student then they shouldn't be drinking and they should be confronted. You shouldn't call someone on them to get them in trouble, but saying something to them in a polite way is perfectly acceptable.

If they're not of age then they shouldn't be drinking either.

If they're getting drunk then they should be confronted politely.

We represent our school wherever we go. Having a drink doesn't poorly represent our school. Breaking the rules and/or getting drunk does. Just be a good representation and I'm good with that.

I think it's ok, as long as people aren't intoxicated. You have to remember, not every Liberty fan attended the school and there are many of us that attend all of the away games to support our sons, brothers, nephews, etc.

If they arent of age and a student then probably yeah. Id go Jon's route and confront them first (as that would be the Matthew 18 way of doing things), but I would report them if the situation called for it (I think the rule is that if you confront someone you give them 48 hours to turn themselves in or something like that and if they dont then you report them yourself). If all they have is a sip of beer or what have you, then yeah itd be pretty draconian to call OSC over that, but if they are getting totally wasted, then some action ought to be taken.

Agree with you completely. My biggest thing is those Liberty fans who didn't attend the school should still respect the values of the school while representing the school. I hung out at Steve Lloyd's tailgate many, many times and they always had alcohol, but they always did it in a respectful way and no one was getting anywhere close to drunk. He told me on multiple occasions that he respected the school and what it stood for and didn't want to be disrespectful. To me, that's the way that I would hope any Liberty fan would be.

I share Mr. Lloyd's mindset. I maintain control and behave in a manner that doesn't shame the school or our beliefs. Then again, esp if you have kids, that's something you should be doing in your daily life. Everything in moderation.

I'd guess for many of us 40-somethings this isnt an issue at all. Check yo-self befo you wreck yo-self.

nothing worse than a snitch. I totally agree with Jon in confronting the person if it is a student over or under 21. anybody who thinks that alcohol consumption is not happening during tailgating at LU is living in a bubble.

Just a general overall thought of not getting stumble and fall down drunk and humiliating yourself, much less the school on your shirt, especially when you are talking about being in a public setting, around kids, etc. I'm Baptist and like a cold beer or a good bourbon as much as anyone else, but I'm not going to show my behind while imbibing. Let's just not bring up the subject of MD 20/20 wine at all.

Then again, on more than one occasion unfortunately, I've seen 100% sober 'fans' wearing Gardner-Webb apparel at events that I was more embarrassed to be grouped with based on their actions. I'm sure there are plenty here that can identify with a similar scenario.

My policy is that if I am wearing liberty gear, as an alum I consider myself a representative of the school and I do not indulge, even here in the DR, where it is not unusual to see young children drinking beer with their parents at a family outing. I do however have other clothes.

ANYONE....can buy a Liberty shirt and hat and wear it where ever they want....Friday cheers, football games, etc. So no, I wouldn't confront anyone if they were just wearing Liberty clothes. If a student is found drinking on or off campus there are rules to take care of that situation and Yes, if I were positive they were students....I would definitely report them. As far a one or two beers being OK as long as you aren't drunk....walk in the shoes of a family torn apart by alcohol and ask them how it got started ...they didn't start off on a beer binge....it started with ONE BEER....

I knew this was where this thread was going to end up so this will be my last thought on it....

your point is well taken, and I would submit to you and others who love to break out that line, the following:

it's the same with sports
it's the same with driving fast
it's the same with sex

many activities which are inherently harmless for the majority of people can become an addicting behavior for the small minority of those with the personality that has addictive tendencies.

Don't put yourself in a situation that may be bad for you.

I see no reason to tailgate any different on the road than at home I enjoy the absence of beer at Williams. I've been to a lot of pro-games ... all over the NFL ... and have had beer poured all over me at just about everyone of them. Been to East Carolina games and realized pretty quick that they have more beer fans than Pirate fans.

I'll have an O'Doul's and a win please GO FLAMES!

Thanks for the good thoughts. Beer is not that important in my life.(relative to representing our school and myself) . But after reading, I think i could combine two things i enjoy. Liberty Football, and BOOD Light. See you all at NC STATE!

I don't see why you would act any different at an away game than a home game.

because drinking at an away game isn't prohibited like it is at LU. That is the difference.

I know that people drink while tailgating at LU, but that is something I wouldn't do out of respect for LU. With that said at an away game if I decide to have a drink I don't think there should be a problem with tha.

Also I despise when people try to say all alcoholics start by having one or two beers. Its a lame arguement against drinking. People can abuse anything so I guess I should live in a bubble forever and not do anything....It could lead to bad things. See how this logic makes little sense??

OK, but I have yet to hear a good argument for drinking.
