Fan the Flames Preview 2011 Pt. 1: QB

Well now that summer is very soon upon us...and in some ways is already here (and tickets have gone on sale for the NC State game to Flames Club members), the minds of many Flames fans turn to football season. With about two months until the opening of training camp for the 2011 season I thought I'd once again write up my own preview of each position for the 2011 season. With that, let's start with probably the one position (other than center) which touches the football every play...the quarterback.

Players Returning:
Mike Brown (Redshirt Senior)- 223/351 2956 Yards 23 TD 11 INT
Tyler Brennan (Redshirt Junior)- 26/35 222 Yards 3 TD 1 INT
Brian Hudson (Redshirt Sophomore) - No 2010 Stats
Gabe Henderson (2011 Redshirt)- No 2010 Stats (played sporadically at WR)

Players Lost:
Brian Reese

Players Incoming:
Josh Woodrum (6'3" 205 Lbs Cave Spring HS) 2011 Signee

Mike Brown had some rough patches in his first full season as "the man" at QB but he made the most of it, finishing in the top 15 for the Walter Payton Award (given to the outstanding offensive player in Division I-AA/FCS), earning Big South Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year (won it is 2009 as a WR) and establishing himself as someone who will make it difficult for defensive coordinators to get a good night's sleep when preparing for Liberty.

Tyler Brennan served as Brown's backup in 2010 and he showed extremely well in limited duty. He showed some wheels in the spring football scrimmage and Brennan will get more opportunities to show what he can do under center.

Brian Hudson really didnt see the field in 2010, not attempting a single pass.

Brown will no doubt be the undisputed starter for 2011, but with word that Brown will be seeing additional time at WR (to help his potential NFL draft stock), Look to see a lot of Brennan at QB and also some appearances by Brian Hudson (especially late in games).

Glad youre so excited Jon...(whether its sarcasm or not). With the college sports landscape pretty quiet (other than the respective CWS and the outdoor track and field championships the only ones left), its always nice to be able to keep the discussion going until fall practice gets going in August

Thanks for mentioning that manson...I guess they are taking him the Mike Brown route. Be interesting to see how he does next spring.

Rocco won't play Brown at WR just to "raise his NFL stock". If Brown plays some WR it will be because Rocco believes that's how he will best help the team in that situation. Brennan is a heck of a QB, so he'll play a huge part in our offense, whether that involves giving Brown a break, or if the game is in hand. He'll play a good bit this year.

Also Beej... you should put the class of each player next to their names... that might really help out some of those who aren't familiar with what's going on around here.

Thanks pretty...Ive updated with the classes of the returning and incoming players and will include that in the rest of the previews. Running Back will come on Monday and I'll try to post a different position each Monday thereafter

Mike was pretty hobbled by the end of the season. I think in order to protect him and stop that from happening this year, we'll see a lot more Tyler than we saw last year.

A lot of that I think was because he had to carry the load running AND throwing the ball. If we can get the running game on track that should take a lot of the pressure off.

"With Brennan in the game, which Rocco hopes to do even more in 2011, the Flames were able to be more versatile and use Brown's athleticism as a running back or wide receiver option."

:D

Coach Streeter was spot on in the interview about Tyler. He has been in this system for two years and with him in the game, he opens up not only more options for Mike Brown but it shows that teams cant just pin their ears back when he is in the game and come after him.

Indeed...Redshirted in 2008 and backed up MB the last two years...for some reason when I wrote that I forgot he redshirted his first year...my point is still the same though..with as long as he has been in the system, even though he isnt another Mike Brown, he's not some stiff that when he is in the game, teams can just blitz and shut down our offense.

Passing: Tyler > Mike (this is by no means a bash on Mike either... the dude had 3k yards passing last year)

Tyler (when he gets the opportunity next year), will make Brock Smith look like chump change. Tyler is a stud. I make that comparison because Tyler is a pocket passer.

One thing Streeter said in the interview, “this is the greatest collection of talent we have at the QB position since we’ve been here.”

good thing since we may be using Mike at WR if Summers is a no-go.

Yes, I'm a pessamist. Consider where I live.
