I saw Mike Brown and Kyle DeArmon walking around today with someone from FSN being filmed. Can someone tell me what they are doing?

My favorite part of the video is when the guy goes.... "yeah Mike Brown, he's like 6, 6'6", 150" (not knowing that Mike Brown is standing right next to him)

And for the record, the point is he said 6 three times. Yeah that's funny. Here's a link to it.

Wow. Students are still clueless after all these years.

The misses on athletic questions don't bother me - not everyone pays attention to sports. But the whole "How many years has Liberty been in existence?" thing was pitiful.

Same thing I was thinking. Hello, the 40 year stuff is everywhere!

It almost looked scripted, the way they panned the camera up to the 40 year banner while the students were trying to think of it.

And some of them can't do this math problem in their head:

2011
-1971
40 years

I have no doubt it was real. Most kids really are that dumb.

If you want to get overtly technical (as I probably would have if I was on camera) the school hasnt quite been around 40 years. the school is in its 40th year this year (with the 40th anniversary of the school's opening coming in September) so technically it has been around 39 years and some number of days (if I could find the exact date I could come up with a more exact number). It still saddens me that most students wouldnt know basic history of the school they attend though...

Not sure this was a good PR move...we're already criticized for low academic standards and now we're featuring this on our website. Staged or not, this is nothing but ammo for those who despise us...really making it quite easy to take cheap shots.

Mrs. Cider, who doesn't follow LU football at all, loved the video clip so much that she watched it 3 times. Of course, we both went to college with Kyle's folks, which made us interested in the clip.

logic...chill out (a word of advice Ive received often from people on this board). You cant take everything so literally...when you get a camera on you and a mic stuck in your face, anything can happen...this was just a light-hearted video with two of our players. You cant take everything and worry so much...if people are working so hard at finding ways to knock the school that they are watching videos like that, then they need to find much better things to do with their lives...I thought the video was great...I mean yeah we groan at Jaywalking when Leno asks questions of people on the street, but if people are using Jaywalking as their primary ammunition to question the American educational system, then they need to take the time to actually do research...and I dont think this was designed to be a PR move by the school...as I said, its a lighthearted video (it is good to be lighthearted from time to time...) good for a few laughs...nothing more

Not really sure how you came up with this... at all.

We're laughing about a video in which our own students (at the world's largest Christian University and self proclaimed want to be top national university) cannot do simple math. And that is funny to us and a great video.

Anything you do and release publicly is either positive or negative PR move, so yes it was a negative.

If we're trying to recruit top notch students this will not help - my guess is the top high school students with a hint of conservatism did not find this funny. In my opinion it made us look downright awful, staged or not.

Combine the above with this kind of press http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/24/us/24 ... %20&st=cse that comes out daily and it is a wonder we can recruit anyone at all.

Everything we do and say is under the microscope because of who we are...not a bad thing but a power that must not be misused - we need all the help we can get if we truly do want to be top-notch - you do not see videos like this coming out of top schools, making fun (staged or not) of the shortcomings of their own undergraduates.

This is only on the athletic site that I can tell its not like its posted on Youtube or being used as part of a public recruiting push logic. the only people who would see it are people that are visitors to the athletic site and I dont think that youll find juniors or seniors that are considering colleges go "Gee, I think Im going to check out their athletics website. Im sure thatll help me in making my decision." That goes for any students no matter if they are conservative or not. If a student is making their decision (or basing part of their decision) on some video that they see on the athletics website, then I dont think that they are someone who would do well on the mountain. You cant take everything at face value. I mean you could have an honors student who can write the most amazing thesis, break down and factor binomials, trinomials, perform differential calculus, invent a cure for cancer in chemistry lab (ok that one is a little far fetched), but if you stick a camera in their face they might draw a blank on something that basic...let me use this example...

Have you ever watched a game show and thought to yourself, "I bet I could do a better job then that guy" when you see someone not win or something...you dont know how youd act when the camera is on you. You may be the smartest, most articulate person but when the camera is on, you may not do as well as you had expected. Does that mean you arent very good? absolutely not. Do I think that some video posted on a site that (more than likely) only is going to be regularly visited by fans of Liberty is going to somehow hurt our recruiting? Certainly not...Methinks that you are taking things way too literally and doing some rather unnecessary handwringing...

My goodness... how you even tie politics and conservatism in with video is quite a stretch...

Also, have you ever thought that there's some people (like the NY Times), who will hate us no matter what for what we stand for?

I loved this. Heard they were making another one. Yes some of the students look dumb but that happens with all videos like this. Loved the part with Jesse trying to spell SirChauncey.

You're right, there is an extremely high correlation between retention and how I feel about a video that openly makes fun of a student's inability to compute simple math.

Not knowing what Mike Brown looks like in person is funny. Not knowing how old LU is and not being able to subtract 1971 from 2011 is NOT something we want to advertise. Remember Leno did this to mock the people - he was laughing at them not with them.

No.. Theres Not.

I would say the retention ratio is based upon a list of other things, and that would not be a top 5 reason.
