Scout Profile

2012 offensive lineman Darcell Whitaker (6'5"/290) of powerhouse Petersburg High (Va.) has a lot of upside. He is physical, has long arms and good hands, and will add on more weight. Whitaker caught the eyes of the coaches at the Richmond National Underclassmen Combine, walking off the field as the Combine offensive lineman MVP.

As for recruiting, Whitaker who aspires to be an attorney, is not shy to say that Wisconsin takes the cake, a school he says is also recruiting him hard.

"Wisconsin is my number one. I like their history department and location. I want to major in politics and government so that I can be an attorney one day. I also like the cold, and I believe being away from home will give me a chance to mature on my own.

"I will definitely take my first official visit to Wisconsin."

Coming in at number two is Iowa State.

"I like their facilities and coaching staff. I look forward to checking them out, too,"

In addition to Wisconsin and Iowa State, Whitaker is hearing from Temple, Oregon, Duke, Liberty, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Auburn, Texas State and Florida.

Good size and good hands but I think he will have trouble with some speed rushers at his size

Wasn't Petersburg HS where Moses Malone made the jump to the Association back in the day. I know it is random, just heard his name mentioned today for his 53rd birthday and remembering how awesome he was.

Petersburg is in the Central District and I have played against them and coached against them. It made me laugh when the piece referred to them as a "powerhouse". They are a good team with really good athletes and that is about it. Now as far as this kid goes he looks like he would be a really big addition to the LU family.

Moses hangs out every summer at Fonde Rec Center and he's working with Hasheem Thabeet this offseason trying to help him find some inside game. Incidentally Thabeet was a guy who played at a little Christian school by my house who I gave our staff a heads up regarding when he arrived in the States as a sophomore.
