Dang--they have something on everybody!

I did a search of Karcher's statistics and was wondering why he got so much time in 87. Well, guess what, he was the scab QB during the players' strike, and I guess, earned himself a spot on the team when the real players came back. Guess he left that out of his bio when he came to LU! The only thing I ever saw was "he was a member of the Broncos 1987 Super Bowl Team."

1987 QB Ken Karcher and the scabs helped Denver to a 26-17. Thank you scabs for helping the Broncos gain home field advantage in 1987!

I guess "Scab" doesn't show up as well on a resume. Go figure. A lot of otherwise overlooked guys got into the League that year as scabs and some ended up making respectable careers for themselves. Chris Chandler comes immediately to mind.

I believe Kelvin Edwards was a scab for the Cowboys who earned some time once the real guys came back.

Didn't Ken's buyout contact say he could not be a college head coach until his contract time was up. I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am wrong.

From what I recall it was a financial rider in the contract, not a college rider. He was guranteed $X from LU for the remainder of his contract, ANY job he got afterwards that paid him less then that LU was still compelled to pay him either $X or $X - his current salary. IF it was a job over $X then LU was no longer liable. There was scuttle but that he actuallyjust got a lump sum payment but I do not know about the validity of that. That was my understanding but I could be wrong as well.

I'm tired of all you self rightous know it alls - fair weather friends. I'm a fan of Liberty and the Liberty Way. Im still not sure if KK was a good field coach or not. He ran a quality program and totally supported/believed in LU's goals. Sam was a great ambassador for LU but he left the program in shambles and publicly didn't support the move up. I'm happy to have a man like Coach Rocco on board and for all the excitement and can't wait for the season to start. Regardles of what happens LU's administration shares a lot of blame for the lack of on field victories - example a killer schedule that made sure you started out with two losses and beat up. I scoffed at CCs and GWs schedule but ours hurt. I think this years schedule is reasonable.

Welcome to the board, numero diez. I think if you read some of the threads on both this board and the old Firehouse over the course of the past year or so, you'll see there has been plenty of criticism to go around. But as I'm sure you understand, the ultimate responsibility (good or bad) lies on the head coach. They will get an inordinate amount of praise when things are going well ... and far too much criticism during seasons like 2005. I think most of us feel he had lost control of the team last fall and a change was required. But it doesn't diminish many of the things he accomplished on campus ... particularly in the area of recruiting and spiritual growth of the team.

So your are saying you liked KK or not?? If you read an earlier post by someone who is dear to me, you will see that the dicotomy between this year and last was addressed briefly. I can not think of ANYONE who would honestly say that KK was not a man of tremendous personal integrity and who had a walk with God closer then just about ANYONE (Maybe by boi GMTM) here. But KK was not perfect. His "downfall" can be blamed on him AND the admin. <Insert D1 debate thread here> The schedule was brutal, and that was partly b/c of him and partly b/c of the administration. As far as being able to coach, that is open. He did bring in some good players, but there were those who said his abilityto relate to them was not the greatest. An 18 yo college freshmen has a little bit different mentality then a 24 yo playing the game for a living. Bottom line IMHO: KK's intergrity trumps alot of his "supposed" ills
So which side do you fall on?? Are you saying NO LU coach can be criticized??

Blast that difficult schedule! Oh, if only we hadn't had to play perennial powerhouses such as Charleston Southern, or Norfolk State... then things would be different!

And Karcher did bring in some good players -- such as Sam Gado. And while I can't say that Karcher couldn't relate to Gado (after all, Karcher helped get Gado's foot in the door to the NFL), I can say that Karcher didn't play Gado.


But still... it's in the past. Seven days from now, the Rocco era will begin -- one that we can all hope is marked by victories on the field, and growth off of it.

Ok ED, let's play the what if game. If LAST year's team had THIS years schedule, would they have won more games and been less demoralized?
As for looking forward, we have IMHGO a good coach who will move this program forward

I don't need to justify that post for two reasons:

1) It's off topic.

2) If last year's team had this year's schedule, would they have won more games? Well, I should hope so, looking at the competition (Glenville State, St. Paul's, Helen Keller School of the Blind). Would they have been any less demoralized? Well, it would have been pretty demoralizing once you put up the big donut in conference play. Which we did.

IMHO, we have a better coach, and the program will move forward. Case in point, the four transfers that we got from I-A. How many of them would have come in if we didn't change management? Probably... none.

Can we never talk about this again after Thursday?

agreed LUconn. karcher has been gone. we wish him well, the rocco era started when he was hired. so this thread is now closed!
