Hello all! This is my first time seeing a road game at VMI and I was wondering what the atmospere is like there on gameday for those who have participated before. How early should we arrive? Are tickets normally pretty easy to get at the gate? Where do most of the Liberty fans sit? Thanks for the information and looking forward to seeing everyone on saturday!

Tickets are easy to get.

Liberty fans sit on the away side of the stands (the ones next to the road).

The atmosphere over there is great but it's not great in the traditional sense that you'd normally think of. The military aspect is awesome. I don't even want to describe it because I doubt I'd do it justice.

The one bad thing is parking. There is absolutely none. You'll likely have to get there an hour early and park downtown and walk about a half mile down to the stadium.

It's a highly traditional military academy that produces some of the best leaders in our military today. Use your imagination 8) the atmosphere is awesome.

I've never parked there for football but even parkign for basketball was terrible. Where are you recommending downtown, was there a lot of just on all the sides of the streets next to W & L. Do you guys know if they just sell gen. admission for the visitors and then we sit on that side or ? THis is the last place on my list in VA to check off to go to a road game @.

They are ruthless. They absolutely embarrassed our student section two years ago in basketball. Fortunately for us, they won't have much to cheer for this go round.

One of my favorite places to go. The drive up there gives me my Fall foliage fix too ~ simply breathe taking. We're making it a habit to come back home through Roanoke with a stop at Red Robin and shhh, don't tell, listen to some "holiday" music :)

Atmosphere--when VMI scores, they fire off a cannon, and the rats (freshmen) storm the field and do as many pushups as VMI has points. Lots of old school military alumni from the Vietnam, Korea, and WWII eras.

Mascot--it's a kangeroo. In a red sweater. Though I'm really not sure why.

Seating--bring sun glasses and a brimmed hat, because you'll be in the sun in bleachers. And bring a stadium chair, if you have one. Expect a high of 66 degrees and sunny.

Parking--take a right at Cameron Hall (basketball fieldhouse) and drive up to the top of the hill. Park at the parking lot where the school and the park are both located--for FREE. It's a nice walk down, but a killer hike...after the WIN.

Sites to see--Lee Chapel on W&L's campus. See Gen. Lee's statue in the church, and Lee himself is buried in the basement; his horse is buried outside the chapel. Bring him an apple (seriously).

Food--Super always recommended an Italian place on the left in Lexington as you drive in. If you're hungry leaving Lynchburg and are driving 501 North, stop at Mitchells for their fried chicken. Also, Big Island has a great gas station/country store/restaurant.

For the Romantics--yea, the town even has horse drawn carriage rides (in season).

I recommend a ghost tour of Lexington that evening. There's a lot of civil war info to learn from your guide and it ends in a cemetery with Jackson himself.

Darn, I can't believe that I left out about Stonewall Jackson being buried in town, too. And if you are spending the night, Hull's Drive-In is just north of town: http://www.hullsdrivein.com/

I tread in the Lexington fishwrap while passing through the other day that VMI is in the process of taking over the Stonewall Jackson House/Museum. My son is all fired up about hitting all of these on our next trek through Virginia.

FYI -
Parking will be even tougher tomorrow, parent weekend at the 'I' -- and reunions as always. Plus if it rains no parking on the parade ground.
Restaurants to recommend: the Palm's and Salerno's.

Salernos.....I wish there was a drooling emoticon. They have calzones as big as a person's head.

Are you going to the national zoo with the Beej this weekend?
He informed the world on another site that he would not be attending the game this week due to other travel plans.

Sum, that's the funniest thing that I've read all day--just picturing BJ & HMO hanging out together at the Washington Zoo.

Obviously not. B.J. also stated he was going with the best girl in the world.

Everyone here knows - if you're going after a girl, it's best to stay away from HMO. He's a vulture.

The italian place is amazing. and I've stopped at that Big Island gas station. I was the only one not wearing overalls and I had a hat on backwards. It felt as though everyone was staring at me thinking..."ya ain't from around here are ya"
