Looks like this will be a high passing game. Rocco says CSU hasn't defended againt the pass very well but at the same time we can expect to see CSU passing a lot.

i called the coaches show tonight and asked coach rocco about the kick-catch interference call and the call was correct. it was a point of emphasis the previous week for the referees. i also asked him about the offensive play calling especially going to summers two straight times in the end zone. he defended it, but also said using the tight end more needs to be a point of emphasis. rocco did say he and streeter consult on the play calling during the game, so it appears rocco can overrule streeter.

Your talking about the punt-catch interference call right??? No way was that the correct call unless FCS football just up and changed the rule last week. When the CSU guy caught the ball there literally was not anyone within at least a yard of him (the DVR made this abundantly clear).

Somewhere else someone said the rule is that when the ball is muffed you cannot hit the receiver until the ball hits the ground. He has a chance to regain control of it when its still in the air.

Correct. That's a new point of emphasis. I believe that rule came into a play a couple of times during the Clemson-Miami game a couple of weeks back.

It seems that this is a rule that needs to be reviewed and changed. That kid had a clear opportunity to catch the ball and muffed it. It seems that the rule is an out for most muffed punts and with a 15 yard penalty attached!? WOW talk about being rewarded for making a mistake...I wish life was that easy some times :|

The spirit of the rule, I believe, is to not allow defenders to get within a few feet of the receiver to yell at him to try to force him to drop the ball. If he drops the ball and a defender a few yards away comes in and scoops it, then it's OK.

Miami's guys were getting right in the face of a Clemson punt returner and screaming at him to try to get him to drop the ball.

That's exactly what Coach Rocco said on the radio show last night.

It's sort of a dead ball until it hits the gound, and then it's anybody's ball. But as long as it's in the air, even if it bounces off of the returner's body, the defenders can't go for the ball until it first makes contact with the turf.

flamehunter explained it better than I did. I thought it was a bad call at the time, but once I was made aware of the rule, it made a lot more sense.

when rocco explained kick-catch interference to me last night it makes sense, but i still think its a bogus rule.

Makes sense, but a crappy rule. So in theory the ball can bounce off the returners helmet and the ball can go forward another 5 yards in the air and there's nothing the defense can do about it....

There are a lot of things the coverage team could do about it, just not until the ball hits the ground. I don't have a problem with the rule on a fair catch, especially since they have done away with the "halo" when a returner does not call for a fair catch. By calling a fair catch the returner gives up the right to advance the ball. The trade off is that the coverage team can't do anything til the ball hits the ground. If the ball were to fly forward off a returner and be cought in the air, I think it should be returned to the spot where he first made contact with the ball, but I honestly don't know what the rule is regarding that. I agree that advancement of the ball by fumbling should not be allowed when it is not allowed by running with the ball. In essence, this would potentially be rewarding incompetence.

I missed the show last night. Did Rocco or Layer share any breaking news?

Are those shows available on Podcast somewhere?

As far as I know, the show isn't podcasted yet. I wish they would though. I think I have only heard 3 or 4 of them over the last year and a half.
