VA Tech and Liberty????

So this is another rumor I heard from a staff member who talked to someone who probably or may not know what they are talking about in the athletics dept. He told me VT and LU have been talking about playing eachother every year or every other year or something like. We'd get murdered but maybe it could help our program? or hurt it? or both! I don't know. Anyone else heard anything???

There's no way we could schedule them consistently. I thought we talked about getting them on the schedule though. UVA is what, 2014? If nothing else it'd get the locals interested in what's going on in their own town. Oh and also pay us hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Last I heard our FBS schedule is:
2011 NC State
2012 Wake Forest
2013 Kent State
2014 UVA
2015 VA Tech

2013
Western Carolina, East Carolina, Pittsburgh, Marshall
2014

2015

2016
Wisconsin, Western Kentucky, Kansas State, Western Michigan

Chris, you know as well as I do that for schools like Tech those non-conference contracts on guarantee games have flexibility. We are probably a back-up plan in case one of their other deals falls through.
As for any longterm deals I would be shocked. But I could certainly see us signing a couple contracts to head to Blacksburg in the next decade.

I think a game at LU vs VT would certainly put our attendance record far beyond reach unless we played another huge local FBS school.

Ummm, there's no way LU would HOST VT. We might play at their place, but we'll be setting no attendance records at home facing VT for a long time.

Sly, yes, I realize those contracts are fluid. But I've heard enough chatter from people on the inside that make me think a game with Tech isn't close to happening, at least not in the next five years. As far as I know, the UVa game is still a go, but it might be in 14 rather than 13.

VT had someone back out last minute on them (was it last year for this year???) I dont know but I do remember there being a scramble mode to try and make it work but I dont believe the dates lined up.

Yes, JMU ended up getting that date.

Gotcha. I remember that, I'm pretty sure our Athletic Department did everything they could to make this thing work behind the scenes and some others were involved. Like I said though, just didnt line up.

I know they were talking. Shockingly, I heard, the guarantee money Tech pays FCS teams wasn't a whole lot better than what Ball State pays.

the money part doesn't surprise me at all. Got not interest in playing Tech, I like the UVA pipeline and playing other schools around like NC State and Wake, even a Duke or UMD which will probably have some changes to the schedule once the Fridge is canned. Tech is the last place I would choose to go on a road trip too. I'd be interested in rekindling the William and Mary game.

I'd say this area's FBS interests are something in the neighborhood of 25% UVA 75% VT. You'd instantly get the majority of college football fans in the area interested in Liberty football for at least a season. Heck, not even just interested. The better we do the rest of the season, the better they look. They would be pulling for us. Maybe it would stick with some of them. I can't think of a better way to get the locals on our side.

Thats a good reason to do it..the only reason to do it but a really good reason to do it. I'm not a tech fan in case that wasn't evident by the last post.

Our game with West Virginia was a real eye-opener for a lot of folks. Before the game, people around here were laughing at the idea of Liberty football playing WVU. After the game, they certainly changed their tune. Many of them followed LU's season. I can only imagine the impact from a game with Tech would be tripled that of WVU.
