Football Program Set To Open Preseason Workout Camp On Thursday

Coach Danny Rocco addresses his team before preseason camp opens.

August 2, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Exactly four weeks before opening the season against St. Paul’s on August 31, the Liberty University football program will open its preseason training camp on Thursday with its first practice of the 2006 season.

All returning players and newcomers reported back to campus today for preseason camp check-in, which included evening meetings with the coaching staff and members of the athletic department administration.

The first preseason camp under first-year head coach Danny Rocco kicks off on Thursday with a 2:15 p.m. practice on the practice field behind the Hancock Athletic Center.

All preseason practices will continue to run on the Hancock Athletic Center practice field until the FieldTurf installation is completed at Williams Stadium.

The FieldTurf installation is scheduled to resume early next week and should be completed in less than a week after the start of the installation. Once the FieldTurf installation is complete, all practice sessions, both during preseason camp and during the regular season, will be held at Williams Stadium.

All practice sessions are open to the public and a full preseason camp schedule is available by clicking here: http://www.libertyflames.com/media/1912 ... hedule.pdf

Much needed thunderstorm wipes out the last hour or so of the first day of practice ... guys were dragging, a combination of the heat and the usual first-day rustiness. Several coaches said they were very impressed with how Rocco toed the line between too little and too much exertion in the heat ... got the most out of guys without sending them to an IV line. Anyway, nothing real specific to report. It sure does feel a little better here now that the rain pummelled us.

Perhaps the coaches and medical staff are taking notice of how serious the NFL camps are dealing with the heat. Seems like a lot of the pros are backing off, too.

By the way, Chris--did any of the gravel for the turf get washed out?

Quick note off of an abbreviated practice: Wendland, the German kid on DL, is a beast! In pass protection drills, he blew right past his man on the first rep and just threw him out of the way on the next one. Let's hope this continues once we get the pads on.

If you're showing up to practice, he's #75 in blue.

The field looked fine when I just drove by there a few minutes ago ... still no turf down, though.

I have been looking for that myself every now and then. I guess when Todd Wetmore gets around to it. I will spread the word when I see it.

If you had any clue all of the stuff they're having to do right now, you'd understand why it's not up. They're working on so much stuff right now.

is that any indication of the LACK of strength on the OLINE, or is this kid that strong and with technique that good?

Yea, you know that the negative stuff can't start until the day after the first game. False start. Good job.

I'm not sure who he was up against but I hope it was a freshman b/c the O-lineman got embarassed. Bear in mind also that Wendland is 20 years old and started for his team in the German League the last 2 years, so he's not exactly raw.

I always felt it was hard to REALLY judge any part of the team until we play someone else other than ourselves. I figure St.Pauls will be a good test to see what we REALLY have. We certainly saw what we had in last year's opener.

Right. The first game showed the team was flat and leaderless at the top. Don't think that will happen this year.
