Anyone who has followed HS sports around these parts knows that when it comes to winning football, Amherst has been about as good as it gets. We came up short on the Rose brothers, but it looks like this kid was the next in line.

Kirby Anderson, a senior quarterback and free safety for Amherst County High School, verbally committed to play for the Liberty University Flames last month.

Amherst County High School senior quarterback and free safety Kirby Anderson verbally committed to Liberty University late last month after attending a one-day camp with the Flames.
“I told (Liberty recruiters) whatever they saw on that film on Friday night of how hard he played and how aggressive he was, was exactly the same thing you’ll see with that kid Monday through Thursday on the practice field,” Amherst coach Cecil Phillips said. “His engine is always wide open and his motor’s always running, and that’s a sign of a great football player right there.”

Kirby has been going to the church plant I work with in Amherst. I look forward to seeing him play this year.

Very cool. How has that plant been doing? I've only caught occasional tweets about it the past few months.

God's been doing some amazing things, Sly. Just found out Amherst kicks off their season against LCA, in Amherst. Should be a good one.

Bob, I'm fairly certain that's a scrimmage, since Amherst is already playing 10 games. That game is scheduled for Aug. 20, a week before anyone else in the state plays.

Amherst Coach on Kirby ...
WDBJ7.com wrote:One player who will provide fuel for the Amherst offense tank this year is Kirby Anderson. He is back as the starting quarterback after taking over behind center in the middle of the season in 2009.
"He is a phenomenal young man, accepted a full scholarship to Liberty University and what I told those coaches and what I tell everybody about that kid that is extremely special, he is one of the few kids I see go full speed motor is wide open every time he steps on the field Monday through Thursday in practice and this is why he plays so hard and so aggressive on Fridays," said Phillips.

Man, what a terrible break (no pun intended) for this kid. I'm sure Coach Rocco and camp will stick by their offer after seeing the protocol with Chase Barnett. Here's hoping for a speedy and full recovery for Kirby!

Kirby will almost certainly be a DB for us, so even if he has lingering issues with the hand, it's not the problem it would be if he were still a QB.

Well...it was a "glorified scrimmage". The VHSL allows schools to play a "benefit game", that doesn't offcially count. The VHSL takes a third of the gate on those. Over 5,000 people showed up for the scrimmage, which LCA won 13-11. LCA scored on the first play from scrimmage When Seth Good, who filled in for an injured Mike Rocco last year, hit Demitri Knowles with a 70+ yard TD pass. (KNowles is the VA 100 meter dash champion and is from the Bahamas...only his second year playing foootball) LU commit Grant Jones was an absolute beast on the line. Both Schools were rather one dimensional as Amherst relied almost exclusively on the run since Anderson was injured. LCA went predominately to the passing game since their starting running back did not play in the game. Amherst seemed to have more athletic players, but LCA played with a lot of intensity and I think Frank Rocco out coached his opponent. One of the most emotional moments was after the game when Ray Jones and his father were hugging on the field. On a side note ... WSET ranked their top ten teams in the area on Friday night and even though LCA defeated Amherst they ranked Amherst #1 and LCA #4. Interesting stuff .... still a great game.

Im not surprised to see him listed as a DB...he has the kind of speed and hard hitting ability to do well back there...he should match up well with some of the middle size receivers and maybe a few of the big ones too

I don't doubt Kirby's toughness BJ, but he only weighs 170.

Still wearing a soft cast on his broken hand, Kirby Anderson returned to theLancer lineup against Liberty High School back in September.
By CHRIS LANG
Published: February 09, 2011
Liberty University football coach Frank Rocco said last Wednesday that Kirby Anderson’s highlight tape was one of the most dynamic that he’s seen in his six years of recruiting for the Flames, and that Anderson reminded him of former Liberty cornerback Tim Torrence.
Torrence, nicknamed “The Torpedo,” had a penchant for making game-changing, big-time open-field hits.
“The place that we’ll start (Anderson) is boundary cornerback … the boundary corner is a little more of a run player,” Rocco said. “We’ll see how that goes. He’s one of those kids who can immediately have value in the nickel package. We had a package called the penny package when Tim was here, and that’s a position that’s tailor-made for a guy like (Anderson). They can stand in the middle of the field and read and react, then go make a tackle or get into the throwing lane. We have some definitive ideas on how we can use him.”

I actually didn't write that ... Lee Luther -- who handles sports for the Amherst paper -- rewrote what I had at the bottom of the signing day story and fleshed it out for a story for the Amherst weekly with a couple of extra quotes. Just went in and fixed the errant Rocco reference.
