Johnson brothers bring new dimension to Tornado
By BRIAN WOODSON
Bluefield Daily Telegraph
RICHLANDS, Va. — There’s been an Owl sighting at Ernie Hicks Stadium. Four of them to be exact.
Richlands head coach Greg Mance knows the people of War and Big Creek High School aren’t pleased.
“We’re probably not real popular in Big Creek,” Mance said.
That’s probably an understatement. The Johnsons — including brothers Austin, Devon and Albert, and cousin, Cody, have transferred from Big Creek and enrolled at Richlands, and will play football this season for the Blue Tornado.
A junior, Austin was an All-Class A selection last season for the Owls, and is called by Mance the fastest player in his 21 years at Richlands. His brother, Devon, was clocked at 4.65 in the 40-yard dash, and Austin left him behind.Click Here for Full Story
“He can fly...he can lay them down,” Mance said. “He can out-run Devon, he can motor, we call him Percy. He is our Percy Harvin, he’ll play slot, he’ll play running back, wideout, split, we’ll move him around, he’s got a lot of potential.”
Moving from Big Creek, one of the smallest football playing schools in West Virginia, to a much larger Division 3 school will be an adjustment, but Austin is confident in his abilities with the football.
“It’s going to be a lot harder,” Austin said. “There will be a lot more kids and a lot bigger, it will be a lot harder, but they know we can handle it.”
