INDIANAPOLIS -- Once he's gotten off the phone with his friends for the night, it's not unusual for Eric Dungy to chat with his dad. The father-son moments allow Tony Dungy to ask, you know, how things are going, which young lady Eric is going with, those sort of things. Dad wants to see if there's anything on Eric's mind and if there's any fatherly advice he can offer.

As coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Dungy makes his living making adjustments. Some are subtle. Parenting and coaching are a lot alike in that way. As he and his family cope with the toughest loss of their lives, that of their son and brother, James, Tony Dungy is taking the necessary steps to see that it doesn't happen again. Those steps don't have to be huge. In this case, they amount to a simple stroll into the other room.

"Sometimes I don't want to listen but I know what he's trying to do," says Eric Dungy, 14. "He wants to have a relationship, he wants me to know I can talk to him when I need to."

from scout
Eric Dungy says he's trying to focus more on his senior season than on recruiting right now.
"I'm going to wait until after the season to do all my visits and all that. Liberty has been calling, New Mexico has been calling me. Those are the ones calling me the most. I talk to USF once a week as well."

Dungy, 6-feet and 175 pounds, said he's not ready to name any leaders just yet.

"I don't really know yet because I haven't thought about it. USF is close to home so that's nice but I haven't had a chance to really look at too many of them yet."

The talented safety prospect talked about how his senior season's gone so far.

"We struggled early on but we got some guys back from injuries and now they're good. I had a hip pointer. Phillip (Ely) had a back problem. We're 2-1. We got Armwood this week so that's a big game. Last week, in my first week game, I played alright and I did good on Friday too."

Inside the classroom Dungy claims a 2.7 GPA and hasn't reported a test score yet.

Throughout football season, Eric Dungy has been focused solely on helping Plant win a state title. Now that he has achieved that, his attention will shift toward something else.

Himself, and namely his recruitment.

"Right now, I have no idea where I'm going," the senior admitted last week.

The good news: Dungy, who will play either receiver or defensive back in college, has plenty of options and is likely to have even more in the coming weeks. Thus far, USF, UCF, Liberty, New Mexico and Richmond have offered him a scholarship, with Florida State also showing interest.

"His last five or six games, he has really started to come on and play tremendously," Plant coach Robert Weiner said.

When Dungy, the son of former Bucs and Colts coach Tony Dungy, transferred to Plant from Indiana before his junior season, he was "kind of skinny," according to Weiner. Today, the 6-foot-2 standout has bulked up to 185 pounds.

He led the Panthers this season with five interceptions and proved to be a solid tackler.

What's nice about this situation is with his father's connections, if he's got the talent, he'll get a shot in the NFL no matter where he plays.

Lets just hope that if he does pick us that a) obviously he signs and b) he doesnt get the seemingly inevitable downgrade from scouting "experts" that seems to happen when kids pick us (or is that merely limited to basketball)

No mention of LU here: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/r ... 4235.story
From Orlando Sentinel.com "FSU is the lone gray-shirt offer among Dungy's considerations, which are USF, UCF, Oregon, New Mexico and FIU".

Saw this kid play on tv this year and he is a good player. I would be shocked if a school in Florida let him out of the state.

That's about as far away from home as he could go. Interesting choice.
