And if so who is it? If not, who would you like it to be?

I hate that when I forget to sign in, but I did open this topic, just for the record

At this point in time, I would say no. A lot of the fans/alumni hate Coastal but the sentiment isn't returned. A lot of the fans/alumni want to see JMU back on the schedule to rebuild that rivalry.

For football, I don't know if we have one. Would be great to develop one. In other sports, I would have to say Radford.

JMU definately. We have them back on the schedule in the near future. Hopefully we can compete with them by then.

It's hard to have a hated rival when every other school looks forward to seeing you on their schedule.

According to a former RA of mine: Hofstra

(and yes, we were being sarcastic)

App state if we still scheduled them

Judging by the past several seasons, The Flames are their own most hated opponent.

I disagree. App St could care less about them. A rivalry has to have equal footing on both sides. App/WCU, VMI/El Cid, CCU/CSU, etc.

Frankly Id venture to guess VMI. I mean the schools are only a few hours apart and the last few years have Im sure bred some healthy dislike between them

I would agree with BJ and say VMI.....The players hate the students section and the fans taunt them the most. Plus can we remember the unforgetable comback win in 2003 at Homecoming where we were down 28 points at one point in the game.

I would call that game both the HIGH and the LOW point of the Karcher era--had LU lost that game, I would be willing to speculate Karcher would have NEVER gotten the contract renewal. Of course, would we have gotten Rocco at that point in time?

The question I have is....WHICH Rocco could or would we have gotten at that time......Frank was the offensive coordinator I believe at that time under Karcher....But dont quote me on it.

It should be noted that HAD Frank Rocco gotten the job as LU footbal coach then he wouldn't have taken the LCA job after Coach Lantz left and they may not be on one of the longest winning streaks in the state of Virginia and two time defending state champions, and Danny would probably have taken a job elsewhere

It was rumored about a year ago that the Hofstra game was a make or break for K Karcher and we won in OT. If Hofstra would have won rumor had it that Karcher was to be fired. Of course if we would had lost to VMI the Hofstra game wouldn't matter. Karcher would have been gone anyway.

The Hofstra story is more or less true. After the ETSU game which dropped us to 2-6, the decision was made by Falwell and Borek that Karcher was done at season's end. Kim Graham was in that meeting and asked the question, "What do we do if they win out?" Borek replied with, "Well, that won't happen." The higher-ups were completely unprepared for the team finishing 6-6 and couldn't fire a guy who had just given them their first 6 win season since '97. Still, the extension didn't come until a year later after the team had finished 6-5 and the prior contract was set to expire.
And, no, we would not have gotten Rocco at that time.

Wasn't Skip Holtz available at that time. Wasn't he talked out as a possibility to replaced KK.

In the short run--it would have been great to unload Karcher a year or two sooner, but in the long term, I think the Flames football program is in much better hands with Rocco as opposed to anyone else.

I think that you are right about that but only time will tell.

My only concern is future scheduling. If we continue to put the Savannah States, Chuck South's, Glenville's. and the St Paul's on the schedule we won't be getting much credibility over the years but the discussions in the past have hinted on improvements to scheduling.

Lou and Skip were still at South Carolina at that time. The rumors about either or both of them coming started flying thick and fast after the '04 season (we were 6-5) but that was also after Karcher had the extension so, no matter how much JF may have wanted Holtz, LU would have had to eat a lot of change to get him.

Chuck South is inevitable as we're in their conference. As for the other teams, I think those will be gone after this season. I think it will start with scheduling middle of the pack SoCon and CAA teams and then once we start to compete with them, moving up to the upper level of those conference.

I have heard that Elon and JMU are on future schedules and if we could get the likes of Richmond, App State, and Furman to get on that would be a big boost to the program.

I wouldn't worry. Both Glenville and Sav State are fill-ins for teams that backed out at the last minute. Like SJ said, Chuck South is unavoidable but, even if they weren't, that program has made some dramatic improvements in a very short time. They may have gotten demolished by VMI last year and have even weaker schedule lined up for this season, but they did beat us, they destroyed G-Webb and they pulled out a miracle 4th quarter to beat Coastal for the conference championship. They're doing something right down there and it may not be very much longer before I-AA has to take them seriously every week.

I can understand scheduling teams like St Pauls Savannah State and Glenville St after what happened last year. These guys need to know how to at least win something. I think that with success this year that quality games will follow
