12th man

I went out to the Chancellor's Cookout at the stadium tonight and heard that they have started a brand new thing at home football games: They pick a dorm and 3 or 4 people from there will take a "12th man flag" and along with the cheerleaders, lead the team out onto the field at each home game, then they run it in front of the student section and then after the game they get to keep the flag for their hall.

Great great great talk from Barber in this video

I'm glad it's being said publicly to students instead of just in my head or on this board. I like how you can hear the toolbags cheer for the teams he's saying shouldn't be your 1st priority. They should probably listen to things being said instead of listening for words or phrases that apply to them so they can cheer.

(Yes, I understand the irony of this subject coming from a guy with the user name "LUconn")

There were just as many girls cheering as well. It's a speech that should be heard by every student at this school, multiple times, until they can memorize it and repeat it.

There's also a video up when Nick went and asked incoming freshmen what they knew about Liberty sports before last night's chancellor's cookout.

It only seems that way the further removed you are from them. You used to be at the same level.

Also, it appears to me that Nick is in a girls' dorm. tisk tisk.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the scene where Nick was interviewing a girl in a dorm room.

According to you, the only cool concept come from Austin, Texas right? Everything else is puke worthy. God forbid someone other than the almighty Longhorns come up with a good idea.

My disdain is aimed at Collie Station & Norman.

Again, I love what we are doing. Just hate the name.

What else are you suggesting we call something that is supposed to incorporate the fans as an extra player on the field?

Good to see JB wearing a red polo instead of his traditional dark suit. 8)

It is not really a "man" since it is a group. Maybe something that incorporation its purpose to connect students to team while getting the fans hyped up.

I don't have a great idea right now but perhaps a play on the purpose might be "Firing Squad" (yes, I know the obvious challenges with that terminology ... I'm just thinking out loud). I've seen some school refer to their student as IGNITE & Ignition Team. Considering we are the Flames I could see something along those lines possibly being a fit. If we are going pilfer tags from other schools, why not bring War Eagle or something involving the eagle theme into play?

Once again, I love the concept of what we are doing. But 12th Man really doesn't fit especially considering it doesn't actually involved a true 12th Man football tradition. We're not asking a dorm to have someone strap on #12 gear and play special teams in the game itself.

It doesn't incorporate actual people? Uh, they'll be leading the team out of the tunnel onto the field.

The 12th Man actually plays in the games. We are having the students lead the team onto the field. There is a clear difference.

And I repeat, I love what we are doing. We could just use a better name.

I agree. I think we need to stop borrowing traditions and make our own instead. If we are going to claim to be the world's most exciting University and then borrow all these pre-game football traditions from other schools, then we are just going to be a joke to everyone.

You guys are probably tired of hearing this but I still like the idea of working in the flame idea somehow and borrowing some of the eternal flame from Doc's grave site. Pretty original idea for football.

We didn't borrow someone else's thing. We're not just raising a flag (Seattle Seahawks) or having a player suit up (Texas A&M). Liberty has a very unique dorm system with brother/sister dorms. The way you win the opportunity to be the 12th man is to be loud and into the game the week before. They're not naming the winner until the middle of the fourth quarter. This requires that people stay there the entire game which helps eliminate the problems we ran into where kids would leave in the 3rd quarter when we were up big.

Every possible industry in America takes ideas from other places and adapts them and changes them. Are we going to complain that we use "Beat Coastal" because we're borrowing it from another school that says "Beat _____?" Are we going to complain that we wear red to games because we borrow that from another school who decided to get their fans to all wear the same color? Where do we draw the line in "borrowing" things from other schools?

I think we're getting a little "picky" about the name. It's a good idea, it's unique to Liberty, It's get's the students involved. My take is that we stop worrying about the semantics of the name and get on board with the idea. The tradition isn't being "borrowed". Does everything have to be criticized? Just my opinion. Also ... there's nothing new under the sun!
