The hallways that have been quiet for the past two months inside the Williams Football Operations Center quickly changed this morning, as nearly 90 football players returned to Liberty Mountain for the beginning of training camp.

Throughout the day, players returned to Lynchburg from various parts of the country and around the world for training camp registration. Following paperwork and some remaining physicals for certain players, the team had its first meeting, as the Liberty athletics compliance office addressed the student-athletes, going over the University’s and NCAA’s policies and procedures.

On the quarterbacks

“I think when I look at the quarterback position today, I was really pleased with Mike Brown‘s ability to lead and run the offense with confidence and make some throws. Then Tommy Beecher went out there and showed that he’s very capable of running the show. He had some poise and confidence. We’ve got a good situation. It will unfold in front of us. We’ll see where it goes.“

Friday evening on the blog, look for a quick Q&A with quarterback Tommy Beecher, the South Carolina transfer who will push offensive tri-captain Mike Brown for playing time at the position. Practice ends late tomorrow, so the post probably won’t be up until around 10 p.m. or so.

Some newcomers worth watching during camp, i.e., true freshman who have a chance to make an immediate impact on the team this fall: Pat Kelly, Malcom Boyd, Jay Weatherington, SirChauncey Holloway, and Robby Cramer.

Defensive back Brandon Saunders, who transferred from Northeastern last year, is no longer on the team.

Lundy, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound redshirt freshman, was listed as No. 2 on the depth chart behind Mario Cosby, and Rocco said Lundy was having a “very good camp” up until the injury. Matt Camire, a 6-3, 270-pound redshirt junior, moves up to No. 2 on the depth chart at the position, and there will likely be some more shuffling along the line as camp goes on. Freshman linebacker Eric Fath has some cartilage damage in his knee and will get scoped and miss 3-4 weeks, Rocco said.
