Alright Flames fans, we now move to probably one of the most polarizing of discussions going into training camp. Brock Smith came into his own under Danny Rocco and finished his Flames career with a flourish. Lets take a look at the signal callers looking to take his place under center:

Lost:
  • Brock Smith Hershey, PA (Graduation)
Kyle DeArmon CLearwater, FL (Switched to WR)

Returning:
  • Mike Brown Redshirt Sophomore Charlottesville, VA
Tyler Brennan Redshirt Freshman Anderson, SC
    Spencer Landis Senior Dacula, GA
Incoming:
  • Brian Hudson 6'4" 200 Lbs Stafford, VA (Brooke Point HS)
Tommy Beecher 6'2" 227 Lbs Concord, NC (Concord HS/University of South Carolina)
Ok boys I know youve taken sides in pretty much every discussion on this one so I dont need to tell you what to do here...Beecher certainly expects to start here. Mike Brown is a multiple threat as well so Im sure he will fight hard to keep the job he got in the spring, and really the guy you have to feel for here is Landis because he was the backup behind Brock Smith the last 3 seasons and now probably will be the third QB for his senior year.

I don't feel sorry for Landis. He has had the opportunity to win the job, and hasn't. That's sports. That's also life.

Honestly, I don't really worry about Landis. I guess its sad that he will be our third string possibly, but I think it comes down to Brown and Beecher. Although if we go with Beecher, Brown will be a WR again and Landis will stay the back up. Landis is a solid back up, but I don't think he is a starter... Sorry TTL!

I think we have the best chance to win with Brown as our QB. I just don't know about Beecher. I think he will be good, but will make mistakes in the 4th quarter when we really need him to shine.

I realize we need receivers, but I think Mike's abilities to run as a quarterback are too much to pass up for this year. Our OL should be pretty good, but we're very inexperienced at center. We have no clue how that position is going to work out. On a bad snap, which is going to happen, Mike has the ability to not only not lose yards, but to gain yards. A kid as talented as Mike needs to touch the ball every play, and that's not going to happen at wide receiver.

Mike- Speed and Play making....... Lacks the arm and hasnt had that much experience at QB

Tommy- Experience at a high level, (thats about all i know).................. He seemed to throw picks, and no experience in our system.

Tyler- Great Arm, Can make all the throws.............. Even less game experience than Mike (none). Doesn't posses the scrambling skills that brown does.

So this is all basic info that every one on here already knows, but I am trying to map this thing out for myself...... And I would have to say I give Mike the nod, with a few packages built in for Tommy (mike at WR possibly). Planned series that he comes in. And Tyler has plenty of time to get better and be a great QB, but for now he can just keep shredding the 1st team defense in practice.

I thought we were pretty set at WR. I know we lost some great guys but we have some great talent coming up.

Do you care to explain why you think we "need" receivers. Maybe you meant receivers of Mike's caliber. Do you think he is that far above the next two or three guys. I am not saying he isnt, I am just curious, because this goes against what I have always thought.

Maybe I should've added "experienced" receivers because that's what we lack. We have talent but not much experience.

And we lack receivers with hands. That's why I say Mike gets a lot of reps at WR. He will line up at QB quite a bit as well, but we need him as a playmaker at the wr position as well.

QB is the most important position. You fill that first and foremost with your best QB. If that's Mike, he'll be our QB. If it's not, then he won't. It's that simple.

Agreed. Dont feel sorry for Spencer. At least he's gotten a FREE education out of it. (...as I write out the check for my student loan payment...)

i would like to wish tyler brennan well this upcoming season and hope he gets to take a few snaps... his mom works for my dad. Never gotten to meet the guy, but since he is from my hometown it'd be good to see him do well at liberty
Coaching changes
