Fan the Flames 2009 Outlook: Running Backs

This position probably is the toughest act to follow of all of them. Rashad Jennings came in and stamped his name in the top 5 of every rushing category in Liberty history in only three years. Not to be lost in all that, Zach Terrell made a pretty fair impact after switching over from QB in his freshman season. With their departure lets take a look at the guys who will be called upon to fill the void in the backfield:

Lost
  • Rashad Jennings Forest, VA (Graduation-drafted by Jacksonville Jaguars 7th round)
Zach Terrell Manassas Park, VA (Graduation)
Returning
  • BJ Hayes Redshirt Sophomore Valentines, VA
Terron Lawrence Redshirt Senior Wake Forest, NC
Alfonso Wells Redshirt Junior Woodbridge, VA
Terry Williams Redshirt Junior Miami, FL
Danny Broggin Redshirt Junior Brookneal, VA

Incoming
  • Aldreakis Allen 6-0 210 Lbs. Colbert, GA (Madison County HS)
Chase Barnett 5-8 175 Lbs Stafford, VA (Brooke Point HS)
Kevin Fogg 5-10 175 Lbs. Raleigh, NC (Apex HS)
SirChauncey Holloway 5-8 190 Seffner, FL (Armwood HS)

Holloway enrolled early but was not able to participate in spring practice and probably has the best chance Id think to jump in right away and maybe start, although Terry Williams was right in the rotation at RB until he went out with an injury in 2008 and no doubt wants to establish himself. Danny Broggin ran some plays at RB and now will be looking for more time in the backfield as well, although with his speed he probably will split time with BJ Hayes at A-back.

Alright boys, let us discuss the backfield boys and as always, if any info is in error or I missed anybody feel free to bring it up. Next up is the QBs and I know that one probably is going to need a week for itself with all the debate that already has taken place and will no doubt take place

BJ, that's maybe the greatest understatement of all time.

I trust Coach Rocco's judgment, but I sure wish we could have red shirted Zach Terrell last year. Was there any talk of that?

Yeah there was. Apparently Coach Rocco even approached Zach with the idea. I don't exactly remember who squashed it.

Pretty sure it was the coaching staff.

My guess it that we will have a freshman starter at running back, probably SirChauncey Halloway...

Redshirting Zack was under discussion but neither the coaches or Zack were ever really sold on the idea, especially after Rashad broke his finger in the first quarter of the first game of the season.

BJ, Ofuani and LiDrazzah left the program prior to the spring semester and you forgot to add Courtney Anderson but neither he nor Terry Williams are in any position to contend for playing time right now.

Crap! That's not what I meant. I was trying to address BJ Williams. BJ Hayes is completely on board.

Good! That would be a big deal. BJ will work into the plans quite a bit, I would bet, if we spread out the offense more with Mike at QB...

Hayes and former William Campbell standout Danny Broggin will start the year as the Flames’ top two tailbacks, and a group of freshmen that includes Aldreakis Allen, Chase Barnett, SirChauncey Holloway and Kevin Fogg will all battle to be the No. 3 tailback. Broggin counters Hayes’ speed with inside running power.
