Mike Brown and Shay Nicholson came to Liberty together and redshirted together last season. So it was only appropriate that Brown would honor his late friend by wearing Nicholson’s No. 22 jersey for Saturday’s game against Elon.
Nicholson, who left school after a semester, died early Friday morning after suffering a gunshot wound several weeks ago. The team took the news hard. Despite the fact that Nicholson had left school, he never left the Liberty family.
Brown, who normally wears No. 10, caught three passes for 82 yards Saturday, including a 50-yarder that set up a Matt Bevins field goal.
“It just made it that much more important to me, not only me, but to everybody here,” Brown said.
Said Liberty tailback Rashad Jennings: “It’s tough when you lose a friend like that. And he was going to be a good player. He was a raw running back, and we were teaching him a lot (when he was with the team). He was picking it up. He was going to be great.”
Liberty’s players had No. 22 decals attached to their helmets. Some, like redshirt freshman receiver Chris Summers, had “#22” stenciled onto their eye black.
