LEXINGTON, Va. – Liberty held off a second half VMI rally to post a 38-26 victory over VMI Saturday before a crowd of 6,813 on Military Appreciation Day in Lexington.
VMI outgained the Flames, 435-425, but was hampered by inopportune penalties, fumbles (5), and also squandered two red-zone scoring chances.
Liberty remained unbeaten in the Big South, going 4-0 in the league and 8-2 overall. With Gardner-Webb’s loss to Coastal Carolina Saturday, the Flames captured their second straight Big South football crown.
VMI dropped its third straight game and fell to 3-6, and 1-3 in the Big South.

No. 25 Liberty overcame a slow start on the afternoon to not only claim a 38-26 victory over Blue Ridge Mountain rival VMI, but its second straight Big South Conference title. With the victory at Foster Stadium, the Flames clinch the regular season title with one conference game remaining on their 2008 Big South slate.
The win, Liberty’s 10th straight against Big South foes to extend its league record winning streak, gives the Flames a two-game cushion with one game Big South game remaining on the year for each conference opponent.

LEXINGTON - Virginia Military Institute had cut Liberty's once-comfortable lead to two points midway through the third quarter.
The cannon boomed in the end zone, and the cadets ran down to the track surrounding the field and starting doing pushups. The momentum shift was clear, the upset that would make VMI's season and break Liberty's now a possibility.
Flames running back Rashad Jennings turned to his linemen on the sideline and asked them, "Can you end the game or not?"

CHET WHITE/THE NEWS & ADVANCE
LEXINGTON — Liberty’s defense was predictably gassed. VMI had spent much of the first half and the early part of the third quarter Saturday at Foster Stadium running all over the Flames. A pitch here for a big gain. A burst up the middle there for a first down. The Keydets had cut an 18-point deficit to two, and the Flames knew they needed to do one thing: Get the big boy the football.
There are certain moments in which Flames coach Danny Rocco narrows the playbook and has Rashad Jennings run the power play up the gut. Repeatedly. The last thing Liberty needed was a quick strike. Sure, the points would have been nice, but the defense needed a rest. Three straight handoffs established the tone. Jennings went for eight, eight and six yards, jumpstarting the grind-it-out drive that would keep the Flames in the lead.
