Big South Announces Football Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Stony Brook running back Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) and Seawolves defensive end Chris Richards (Quartz Hills, Calif.) have been named the Big South football Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week and New Balance Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for games played the first week of the 2008 season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Liberty’s Jonathan Crawford (Staunton, Va.) was named Special Teams Player of the Week, while Stony Brook running back Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.) was tabbed Freshman of the Week.

And here is the reason Jonathan was picked ...

Crawford returned a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown against North Greenville midway through the third quarter in the Flames’ 49-10 victory. It was the longest kickoff return of his career, and Crawford is now just one of two players in Big South history to return a punt and kickoff for a touchdown in a career. Crawford helped the Flames average 40.67 kickoff return yards on three returns against the Crusaders, pushing Liberty to first nationally in the statistical category following the opening weekend of FCS football.
