i'd be interested to see that as well...a lot of people use terms like "uva standards" pretty freely.

they obviously had about 81 other scholarship athletes who didn't have any major problems the "uva standards".

Coastal would take these guys in a New York minute, as would any other BSC team if they were/could become eligible. To think otherwise is disingenuous.

the only problem with you guys' last few replies.....besides my screen name, what does coastal have to do at all with this conversation???

the answer...nothing.

i've only made an observation and given a legitimate opinion of the situation.

What does Coastal have to do with it? It's a Coastal fan coming on here saying we're wrong for wanting a player which is implying that Coastal wouldn't want these kids.

i never said you were wrong and i'm glad you can infer what i am implying by reading a few sentences on a messageboard. i only said it was surprising to see how "giddy" people were about taking kids with academic...i mean "uva standards issues". nothing more, nothing less.

i'll state it clearly for you jon.....it's my opinion, and my opinion only, that starting to become a safe haven for kids that can't hack it academically elsewhere is not the reputation i'd want at the university i supported.

While LU is not known for an Ivy League type education, I think we can point to many things that say the kids get a good education and are constatly improving. Debate team, Quiz Bowl team. bar exams, etc. It is certainly not a diploma mill. :D

Everyone needs a chance to get a college education. Liberty has never claimed to be an IVY league school and LU offers a good education if that's what you want, and a great education if you want that too. Liberty has an accredited Law School, a great school of Nursing, and a great Seminary Program. If Sewell can't get his diploma from UVA, then we'll take him here to continue his education. I own a few companies and can tell you first hand that a college degree is a college degree now a days. There are so few times - I actually look at a resume and go - "Hey you went to Richmond - you must be a harder worker, smarter, more competent future employee, because Richmond's known as a great academically focused institution." I had full rides to UCLA and Florida State for academics, but I choose Liberty because at the time it had the 3rd ranked Sports management program in the Nation and 1 of only 13 accredited programs. Were FSU and UCLA better schools academically? Yes, but they didn't have a sports management department, thus missing one of my biggest needs. Sewell's need is to play Football and get a degree - WHY NOT LIBERTY??

These transfers are only a possibility, but if they did occur I do not have to think how much of an impact these players would make. These guys have already demonstrated their ability, and Rocco gets the best of his players. Anyways UVA is a hard school for some and not for others, most people only here of the athlete with these troubles. Here is a link to some of the UVA standards:

I did not really look to hard for the ncaa requirements but I do know they are much easier to attain.

I wouldn't worry about this situation for another couple of months. Then I have a feeling it will get interesting.

Friends Say Fitzgerald Is Considering Joining Dukes

By Mike Barber

HARRISONBURG — Former University of Virginia defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald is considering transferring to James Madison, according to a pair of former high school teammates.

JMU tailback Griff Yancey and fullback Trae Kenney, who played with Fitzgerald at Hermitage High School in Richmond, said Thursday that Fitzgerald, who is no longer enrolled at Virginia, is thinking about joining the Dukes.

“He is considering JMU as an option,” Yancey, a rising sophomore tailback, said by phone from his Richmond home. “He might sit out a year. He’s really not sure what he’s trying to do. I guess he’s just resting.”

UVA is hard for anyone academically, much less an athlete. These kids aren't kids with "academic issues." They're kids with "UVA standards issues."
Believe me, the UVA standard for football players is not that high...although they would like to claim it is.

I know I guy who left the team in the not so distant past because they said he studied too much and was not concentrating on football enough.

Any football player that gets the boot definitely has issues.

Funny. I've heard the exact same thing about VMI. And Presbyterian. And Richmond. And JMU. And Vanderbilt. And....

Everyone on AGS is saying this was some type of honor code violation, not grades.

I find that the folks on AGS are probably the biggest homers and therefore some of the least reliable people when it comes to information. If they find out there's a chance that their team might get him (like that article gave JMUers hope) it's not an academic problem. If it looks like he's coming here, I'm sure they'll switch to admissions-wouldn't-have'-let-him-in-anyway-because-it-was-academic-related mode.

There is still a not so favorable view of LU as well over there. (I know there have been some things said with the Lehigh situation)

Well, if these 2 are on campus next year, I bet they'll like us even less. But in a "I hate them because they just made a deep run in the playoffs and we didn't" kind of way.
