haha do you really want to know what went on last night??? :D :D :D :D :D

with that said...I just don't know how what you said helped the conversation...I know how it is at large schools...but when you are building a new building in a parking lot, its not going to be just the parking spots the building will be sitting in that will be used it will a bunch of other spots surrounding it....its not smart to do that during the school year....

I am just curious to when the plans changed

Yea, parking will suck for students, but that's not where my problem lies.

We are trying to upgrade our football in everything, including a stadium expansion soon. This lot that they are taking away is going to take away a lot where many of our donors park and tailgate for games. Not to mention that, down the road, when we're averaging 15-20k people, they won't have a place to park. Just seems like bad planning to me. I know the athletic department doesn't like it from what I've been told.

this changed when the original spot for the bookstore turned into the new practice field. and from what I'm hearing, it's true. plans for groundbreaking in September. It's a good location looking at it from the bookstore side of things, but terrible from the athletics side. But now it will be easier to access than the current one, and easier to find for visitors. There will also be a starbucks built into the building with it.
The textbook section in the new store will be the size of the entire current store.
As far as parking, I don't know what they are going to do. I'm sure we'll hear people screaming parking garage again, but I'm not sure if thats a good idea or not. That was a very valuable parking lot, but I think if the bookstore wasn't moving there something else would soon.
And while were on the subject of parking, has anyone heard anything about a fountain going in the parking lot in front of Demoss and eliminating more parking spots? I just heard about that today, but it doesn't make sense. they won't even turn on the fountain we have now, why build another one? plus that lot isn't big enough as it is, why are they taking away spots?

This is because when they did their big fundraiser to re-build Demoss as the building it is today, one of the big things they collected on was a fountain with nameplates/stamped bricks which would contain the names of all the donors. Since people ponied up, there are probably a lot of people wondering where their bricks are, given what they paid for them.

JDUB, do your sources say if the new bookstore will be one or 2 stories? The college bookstores that I'm familiar with at UVa and Ole Miss are 2 stories, with textbooks on one story (either 2nd floor or basement) and everything else on the main floor.

I know the a new, bigger bookstore is needed...I just wish that there seemed to be a master plan...I know there has been a master plan made before, but it seems as if things are changing all the time...I think its time to sit down and have a master plan that is final...that contains future buildings as well as a strategy for parking...which in reality is not a huge problem right now as LUConn so nicely put, but very well could if they continue to build buildings in current parking lots...

anyways, there is really nothing we can do about it now except for watch it happen...

I am glad we are getting a new bookstore...it is very much needed as I said...I just am not sure if this is best for all parties...but maybe there are more plans in the works we do not know about....

Two things...

1. There may be a master plan. Do you expect them to post it on the splash page? I mean, seriously. Then again, maybe there isn't. However, our administration is competent. Things will be handled well. If you disagree and it concerns you that much, put in an application and start working your way to the top.

2. They took a small step toward alleviating parking problems this year with the addition of free access to all of Lynchburg's transit system and with the addition of the special commuter parking sticker. If people aren't pleased with that, it's going to be their problem. Mass transit is a large part of most college towns. Time to get used to it. I'm even considering it for my commute this fall instead of driving.

It may not be to your satisfaction while you're here, but that doesn't mean there's no plan or that they're not working on it. I don't mean to sound contrary, but it's hard not to be when people talk about the school like no one is aware of potential problems. We have a lot of hard working intelligent people who will get things right.

wow...I didn't mean to upset anybody...I am not complaining or anything, if they end up building it there then so be it...we need a new, bigger bookstore and I am happy we are getting one...do I think things could be done a little differently?? Do I have my opinions on the matter?? yes and yes....that is what this message board is always about...I am not trying to attack anybody within the administration because I have seen so many things improve since my first year here....but I am not going to not state my opinions in fear of upsetting some on the board...

like I said I am all for this bookstore, and if this is where they decide to build it, then fine....all I am saying is I hope they have more plans in the works for parking (especially for football games like SJ said)....

If I came off as complaining or whatever it is you thought I was doing Scorcho I am sorry, that was not my intent at all....

It's okay, man. You don't have to apologize for your opinions. I'm just apt to defend the school because I'm involved. Don't sweat it. I know can come across rather heavily, but don't take it personally. I'm just crotchety before my time.

P.S.

Where are we going to tailgate this season? :tailgate

Couple of things:

1.
Scorcho: This is because when they did their big fundraiser to re-build Demoss as the building it is today, one of the big things they collected on was a fountain with nameplates/stamped bricks which would contain the names of all the donors. Since people ponied up, there are probably a lot of people wondering where their bricks are, given what they paid for them.

This will make that area more collegiate looking...so I like the fact they are finally following through on this...maybe they can use this fountain to mount an eagle icon on it like Montana's Grizzly or other schools.

2.
Scorcho: There may be a master plan. Do you expect them to post it on the splash page? I mean, seriously. Then again, maybe there isn't. However, our administration is competent. Things will be handled well. If you disagree and it concerns you that much, put in an application and start working your way to the top.

I say yes and here's why. Now that the school is out of debt and they've established a definable goal (25,000 on-campus students), you can start planning specifically for what the final build-out should look like. They should devise what they want, commission the plans, and then render it in conjunction with the Google Earth College project they just completed....and post it on the main site along with a stand alone donation site with the moniker Liberty 20/20...The Vision Realized. Then they should price out everything down to the support beams that way people can donate in smaller sums also...this is what the President at High Point did and they undertook like 6-10 major separate capital improvements projects at once. (check out their site for more on that.)

People get excited and are more apt to give when the can "see" what they are buying into. It would be cool to be able to virtually explore a "final" cut of what the dream LU campus would look like. Of course minor changes are inevitable even when master planning, but I submit this would energize and jumpstart the capital campaign for both the physical campus and the endowment.

3. As far as the book store location, it makes some sense from Barnes & Noble's perspective due to the new Collonade and the road improvements that will be made as someone can get off the highway and come up that road (name?) next to the east campus and have access to it also.

They should eventually build some type of parking garage in the central area of campus and perhaps some at the edge of campus....when they do, for the one in the central part of campus they should include some restaurant and shop areas incorporated into the design on the first floor.

Also, Scorcho, glad to see your RP2008 conversion :D

I have been gone for the last 5 days...did you miss me???? Don't answer that question...A lot of readinng to do... As for in front of Hancock that is where the SFC will be and where they are trying to get all of the students to be.....By having bands play and offering food as well as a place where you can make signs, get stickers, facepaint and tailgate as well....So that whole front grass area will be off limits....I have a few meetings this week with people who will have all the answers and so I will get the grand scheme of things as to it relating to tailgating...

I should know by Monday, Tuesday at the latest, if the bookstore thing is starting in September or not.

As GMTM mentioned, the SFC and Student Life are doing a ton on the Hancock Lawn. It's going to be a lot better than last year.

Tailgating will be fine this season. The book store isn't planned to go in that upper corner, but more towards Lower P1 (do I need to draw a map?). It probably won't start for another 8-10 weeks, and even that could be an early guess.

We'll be fine.

Super, is that location beside the Religion building or between the Liberty Bell and the Spirit Rock?

Lower P-1 is next to the Religion Building...where P-1 is.

Thanks, Super: that helps a lot: I just wish the new bookstore location was a little closer to the Religion building.
