Look at who’s got the moves .....

It’s a little muddier than that. Only one FCS win counts towards bowl eligibility, if I’m not mistaken. So, we need two more FBS wins to be bowl eligible. I don’t think a win against an FBS team + a win against NSU would cut it.

I might be wrong, though.
Per NCAA bowl selection rules we are bowl eligible with 6 wins (and two wins against fcs teams count). Does not endure a bowl game, but we are eligible.

I was concerned the music and noise would be too much for them. In the 2nd quarter I went up to check on them. Their mother said they were loving the game. They were dancing to music and having a good time.

Here are the full standings for the Sun Belt and American after yesterday:

Image

Image

The Sun Belt currently has 1 team automatically bowl eligible (GaSou) and two others on the cusp (App State and Troy, who we beat) with three others on 4 wins (Louisiana-Monroe, Coastal and Arkansas State).

The American has 4 teams automatically bowl eligible (# 10 UCF, #21 USF, Cincinnati and Houston), with one team on the cusp (Temple) and one on 4 wins (Memphis)

Our best bet is if the Sun Belt comes to up short

Coastal plays one team on 4 wins (Arkansas State) in their final 5 games, but also faces bowl eligible GaSou and 5 win App State after Georgia State this week
Arkansas State, in addition to Coastal, gets 4 win Louisiana-Monroe and 3 win ULL.
ULM, who only.has 4 games left, gets GaSou this weekend.

In short, we need to be rooting for the #FunBelt to be beating each other up these last 5 games behind GaSou, Troy and App State

IMHO, I think a win is a win. THere will always be people who are drinking too much kool aid and others who always want change. At this point in the year 4-3 is quite surprising. The problem is that this team is up and down from week to week that you never know which one you are going to get.

1. Attendance was about average given the time of year and interest for this team.
2. Local support will always be an issue given the support for VT and UVA in this town. Time, wins and program improvement will go a long way.
3. People still do not know what they can bring into the stadium and what is prohibited. They get frustrated.
4. Homecoming was handng out blue canvas bags to put stuff in but those aren't clear therefore not allowed. Need better communication between departments to help visitors as a whole.
5. No matter how much signage you have; people will never read.
6. Stadium seats that have arm rests are not allowed; that needs to be clear to everyone.
7. No outside food/beverage. Only one sealed bottle of water per person. People don't read and get frustrated.
8. I think the school needs to plan out the Homecoming activities better so people aren't criss crossing campus so much.
9. Still alot of people leaving at halftime.
10. Still alot of people coming at the start of the 3rd to get in for free rather than paying. Think people just don't want to pay.
11. Think we need to coordinate with the city as the Lynchstock music festival draws alot of young people and fun atmosphere and was on the same day.
12. There are alot of competeing activities on campus that draw people away.

I don't think I have to state how bad we were defensively this game. I got to watch the full game and even squeaking out a 7 point win over ISU should never be celebrated. I don't care how good they are. Ri can sneak diss me all he wants but this was a brutal performance and we were lucky to even win the game. The attendance was miserable and I find it funny that a team with a legit shot of going to a bowl in its first year as an FBS program hasn't been hyped up enough to garner the attention from fans. Even if we play terribly inconsistent that fact alone should get butts in the seats. but hey what do I know I'm just a hater :)

I actually don't think attendance was that bad after looking at the data. It felt empty because the stadium is 6000 seats bigger than last year, but it was essentially the same attendance as last year.

One thing we have to realize as a fan base and program is that homecoming is going to go from the most popular game of the year to the least popular game of the year except for the post-Thanksgiving game. Next year homecoming will be October 19 vs Maine. I can all but guarantee it'll be the second smallest attendance number of the year. Syracuse, Buffalo, Hampton, and New Mexico will all draw better than a random FCS school.

I'd say that's still an overall promotions issue, unless they just don't care and accept the result. I think there are a variety of factors, outside of football, that has made Homecoming less appealing.

I think if they solve some of those issues, it can make up for the fact that they are playing random FCS team.

We're better off beating up on VMI or a more local FCS team, than Maine or Idaho State. I understand the short time frame they had for scheduling, but a VA/NC/SC FCS team not named JMU right now, would be best for Homecoming.

Let's say they pushed back homecoming a week this year and we were playing Troy under the same scnenario/records. I don't believe much would've changed with attendance. I'm not sure whether a lot of our fans would be able to tell the difference between Troy and Elon or Buffalo and Maine. Now if you push back that Syracuse game into October next year, that may be a different story. I think getting App back to the mountain would have a decent turnout; probably even more than Syracuse because we have so many students and alumni from that area. I remember back before they had their title run of how many people were at the game at both places back in the early 2000. Now trying to persuade their administration is a different story.

What's wrong with scheduling JMU? Competition too stiff?

The risks outweigh the reward. Not even a question.
